A fast and sensitive sample preparation strategy using fabric phase sorptive extraction followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry detection has been developed to analyse benzotriazole UV stabilizer compounds in aqueous samples. Benzotriazole UV stabilizer compounds are a group of compounds added to sunscreens and other personal care products which may present detrimental effects to aquatic ecosystems. Fabric phase sorptive extraction is a novel solvent minimized sample preparation approach that integrates the advantages of sol-gel derived hybrid inorganic-organic nanocomposite sorbents and the flexible, permeable and hydrophobic surface chemistry of polyester fabric. It is a highly sensitive, fast, efficient and inexpensive device that can be reused and does not suffer from coating damage, unlike SPME fibres or stir bars. In this paper, we optimized the extraction of seven benzotriazole UV filters evaluating the majority of the parameters involved in the extraction process, such as sorbent chemistry selection, extraction time, back-extraction solvent, back-extraction time and the impact of ionic strength. Under the optimized conditions, fabric phase sorptive extraction allows enrichment factors of 10 times with detection limits ranging from 6.01 to 60.7 ng L-1 and intra- and inter-day % RSDs lower than 11 and 30 % for all compounds, respectively. The optimized sample preparation technique followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry detection was applied to determine the target analytes in sewage samples from wastewater treatment plants with different purification processes of Gran Canaria Island (Spain). Two UV stabilizer compounds were measured in ranges 17.0-60.5 ng mL(-1) (UV 328) and 69.3-99.2 ng mL(-1) (UV 360) in the three sewage water samples analysed.

Bharti Jain, Rajeev Jain, Prashant Kumar Jaiswal, Torki Zughaibi, Tanvi Sharma, Abuzar Kabir, Ritu Singh, Shweta Sharma

Summary: A green, fast, high-sample-throughput, non-instrumental, and affordable analytical method based on surfactant-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (SA-DLLME) combined with thin-layer chromatography-digital image colourimetry (TLC-DIC) was proposed for determining favipiravir in biological and pharmaceutical samples. The method showed good linear range, low LOD and LOQ, and close agreement with HPLC-UV analysis results. The proposed methodology is green in nature and can be applied in resource-limited laboratories during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seafood consumption as a source of exposure to high production volume chemicals: A comparison between Catalonia and the Canary Islands

Oscar Castro, Silvia Borrull, Jordi Riu, Sandra Gimeno-Monforte, Sarah Montesdeoca-Esponda, Zoraida Sosa-Ferrera, Jose Juan Santana-Rodriguez, Eva Pocurull, Francesc Borrull

Summary: Seafood, although beneficial for health, may pose potential risks due to the presence of chemical compounds such as HPVs. A study was conducted in Catalonia and the Canary Islands, Spain, to assess the occurrence of HPVs in commonly consumed seafood species and estimate the associated exposure and risk. Results showed higher levels of HPVs in Catalonia samples, with phthalate esters and benzenesulfonamides being the predominant compounds. Multivariate analysis revealed spatial differences in HPVs concentration profiles between Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Although exposures were higher in Catalonia, the intake of HPVs via seafood was not a major concern in either location.

Emily Gonzalez-Bareiro, Sarah Montesdeoca-Esponda, Jesus De la Fuente, Zoraida Sosa-Ferrera, Manuel Arbelo, Antonio Fernandez, Jose Juan Santana-Rodriguez

Summary: The presence of UVFs and UVSs in common bottlenose dolphins was evaluated for the first time. These compounds, found in personal care products, have unknown effects on the environment. The study aimed to assess the pollution to dolphins due to human activity by determining the presence of 12 UVFs and UVSs in their blubber samples. Three compounds were detected in multiple samples, with OC being present in all samples at the highest concentration.

Investigating the applicability of polar fabric phase sorptive extraction for the HPLC quantitation of salivary vitamin B12 following administration of sublingual tablets and oral sprays

Anastasia Korpeti, Natalia Manousi, Abuzar Kabir, Kenneth G. Furton, Paraskevas D. Tzanavaras, Constantinos K. Zacharis

Summary: In this study, a simple and rapid method combining fabric phase sorptive extraction (FPSE) and high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was developed for monitoring salivary vitamin B12 levels. Sol-gel Carbowax 20M coated polyester membranes were chosen for the selective extraction of the target analyte. The method showed good precision with a relative standard deviation better than 8.2% and the sol-gel Carbowax 20M coated FPSE membranes were found to be reusable for up to 25 times.

Investigating the Use of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Odor Expression as a Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tool-Pilot Study

Janet Crespo-Cajigas, Vidia A. A. Gokool, Andrea Ramirez Torres, Liam Forsythe, Benjamin S. S. Abella, Howard K. K. Holness, Alan T. Charlie Johnson, Richard Postrel, Kenneth G. G. Furton

Summary: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been significant interest in developing rapid detection measures. This study explored the use of hand odor samples and analytical instrumentation to detect SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals. By analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) extracted from hand odor samples, predictive models were developed using sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis. The research highlights the potential of using odor signatures as a diagnostic tool and lays the foundation for optimizing other rapid screening sensors.

Response surface methodology combined Box-Behnken design optimized green kinetic spectrophotometric and HPLC methods to quantify angiotensin receptor blocker valsartan in pharmaceutical formulations

S. K. Manirul Haque, Abuzar Kabir, Nafisur Rahman, Syed Najmul Hejaz Azmi

Summary: The high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) and kinetic spectrophotometric methods were established for the determination of valsartan (VAL) in pharmaceutical formulations. The spectrophotometric procedures utilized different strategies to evaluate the VAL content, and the HPLC procedure was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design (BBD). Both methods showed excellent accuracy and precision, and were validated according to International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines. The analytical Eco-Scale score demonstrated that these green methods were a better option for VAL quantification.
