Summary: The study found that the optimal NaOH pre-treatment conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw to enhance reducing sugar yield were NaOH concentration of 1.0%, solid content of 5.0%, and pre-treatment time of 60 minutes. Optimization of parameters such as solid content, enzyme loading, temperature, pH, and hydrolysis time during enzymatic hydrolysis can significantly increase the yield of reducing sugars.

Summary: The consolidation of cellulosic ethanol on the market is crucial for reducing fossil fuel consumption and the generation of agro-industrial waste. Studies have shown that the use of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and non-ionic surfactants can increase cellulosic ethanol titers and aid in biomass pretreatment and detoxification. This review article provides a detailed discussion on the benefits and mechanisms of adding PEG and non-ionic surfactants in the production of cellulosic ethanol.

Summary: The effects of switchgrass particle sizes on the effectiveness of H2SO4 and NaOH pretreatments were investigated. Increasing particle size led to higher contents of glucan, xylan, and lignin in raw switchgrass. SEM images and FTIR spectra showed no visible variations in microstructures and chemical bonds among different particle sizes under the same pretreatment conditions. The optimal ethanol conversion performance depends on the interaction between the pretreatment method and biomass particle size.

Summary: This study evaluated the pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse with dilute citric acid solution for biogas production. The pretreated black liquor and residual solid fraction were used as substrates for biogas production. The highest concentration of total reducing sugars obtained after saccharifications was in the range of 10.7-184.8 g L-1, with sugar yields ranging from 3.5-88.8%. Biogas production from the black liquor and residual solid fraction showed promising results, indicating the feasibility of using dilute citric acid pretreatment in biorefineries.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different pretreatment methods on the enzymatic digestibility of wood and found that acetosolv pulping-alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching was the most effective pretreatment. In addition, the optimized enzyme cocktail showed higher yield than individual enzymes and the scCO(2) pretreatment had negligible effect on the structure and activity of the enzyme cocktail.

Summary: Avicel cellulose was pretreated with two commonly used carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents, choline chloride-lactic acid and choline chloride-formic acid. The pretreatment led to the formation of cellulose esters with lactic acid and formic acid, which was confirmed through spectroscopic analysis. Surprisingly, the esterified cellulose showed a significant decrease in enzymatic glucose yield compared to the untreated cellulose, but this reduction could be recovered by removing the ester groups through saponification. The decreased enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis may be attributed to changes in the interaction between the cellulose-binding domain of cellulase and the esterified cellulose.

Summary: Deconstruction of cell wall structure is important for biorefining of lignocellulose to produce biofuels and chemicals. This review article discusses various oxidative pretreatment methods including wet oxidation, alkaline hydrogen peroxide, organic peracids, Fenton oxidation, and ozone oxidation. The primary mechanism of oxidative pretreatment is delignification, particularly in alkaline medium, which improves cellulose digestibility by eliminating the physical blocking and non-productive adsorption of enzymes by lignin. However, the cost of oxidative delignification is currently too expensive for large-scale applications.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the non-antibiotic pharmaceutical carbamazepine on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion. The results showed that carbamazepine induced the enrichment of ARGs and increased the abundance of bacteria carrying these genes. It also facilitated microbial aggregation and intercellular communication, leading to an increased frequency of ARGs transmission. Moreover, carbamazepine promoted the acquisition of ARGs by pathogens and elevated their overall abundance.

Summary: This paper developed a machine learning model to predict the biochemical methane potential during anaerobic digestion. Model analysis identified lignin content, organic loading, and nitrogen content as key attributes for methane production prediction. For feedstocks with high cellulose content, early methane production is lower but can be improved by prolonging digestion time. Moreover, lignin content exceeding a certain value significantly inhibits methane production.

Summary: This study investigated the operation of a 1000L microalgae-based membrane photobioreactor system for continuous secondary wastewater treatment. The research focused on a green microalgae strain called Desmodesmus sp. The study aimed to understand key trends and optimization strategies by conducting experiments in both summer and winter seasons. The findings showed that maintaining low cell concentrations during periods of light inhibition was beneficial for nutrient uptake rates. Effective strategies for enhancing algae-based wastewater treatment included cell mass recycling and adjusting dilution rates based on light availability.
