The Brazilian experience of more than three decades in the development and production of fuel ethanol from sugarcane has been an example of the technical and institutional requirements for the sustainable development of second generation ethanol (lignocellulosic ethanol) production. The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate the positive sugarcane conditions for the development of second generation ethanol. In order to do that, different industrial scenarios are considered to discuss technical and economic aspects of present and future sugarcane biorefineries. Furthermore, a carbon balance is performed to assess the added value to the carbon present in different sugarcane biorefinery products. The current Brazilian sugarcane production, which is processed in more than 400 mills, is around 600 Tg y(-1), occupying an area of 78,000 km(2). It can supply 84 Tg of bagasse at no cost and about 42 Tg of trash, which can be processed as a lignocellulosic material for ethanol production or other higher added value products in a biorefinery as carbon balance results showed that a biorefinery is able to add value to the carbon presented in the sugarcane using second generation technologies. Opportunities and challenges for bioenergy-livestock integrated systems in Brazil

Narie Rinke Dias de Souza, Tassia Lopes Junqueira, Otavio Cavalett

Summary: The study highlights the vast opportunities for bioenergy-livestock integration systems in Brazil, with significant positive techno-economic impacts and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, achieving up to 32% and 22% emissions reductions for meat and ethanol production, respectively. The expansion of BLI systems in Brazil has the potential to meet future biofuels demands by using less than 20% of the expected expansion area. Enhancements to BLI systems can be made through additional synergies such as co-digestion of sugarcane vinasse and cattle manure, integration of flex ethanol and biodiesel plants, and utilization of promising alternative industrial crops like macauba, sweet sorghum, energy cane, and short rotation eucalyptus coppice.

Unraveling the potential of sugarcane electricity for climate change mitigation in Brazil

Narie Rinke Dias de Souza, Daniel Garbellini Duft, Karina Maria Berbert Bruno, Daniele de Souza Henzler, Tassia Lopes Junqueira, Otavio Cavalett, Thayse Aparecida Dourado Hernandes

Summary: Bioenergy, specifically sugarcane electricity, is highlighted as a key player in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil. Utilizing sugarcane bagasse and straw for electricity production holds great potential for mitigating climate change. By improving cogeneration systems and recovering straw based on suitability maps, it is estimated that up to 13% of GHG emissions from the electricity sector in Brazil could be avoided.

Gasification kinetics of chars from diverse residues under suitable conditions for the Sorption Enhanced Gasification process

G. Grasa, I. Martinez, R. Murillo

Summary: Gasification kinetics of six chars from residual origin were studied under relatively low temperature, low CO2, and high H2O partial pressures. The Random Pore Model (RPM) showed the best fit to experimental results, but the selection of the reaction model depended on the ash composition, specifically the presence of alkali and alkaline earth metals. Chars with ash content higher than 30% wt. were modeled with the RPM model, while chars with the highest K/Si ratio required modified versions of the RPM to accurately predict reaction rates. Textural properties played a key role in determining reaction parameters, such as the pre-exponential factor and activation energy, for chars with similar ash content and composition.
