Summary: This study aimed to evaluate procedural and clinical characteristics of AF patients with PNP during cryoballoon PVI compared to patients without PNP. It was found that female sex and BMI are strong and independent predictors of cryothermal induced non-transient PNP during cryoballoon PVI, and all patients with non-transient PNP experienced complete resolution after a mean recovery time of 68 ± 79 days.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of cryoballoon and laserballoon catheters in patients with persistent and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Both catheters were found to be highly effective and safe, with similar favorable rhythm outcomes after 12 months of follow-up. The cryoballoon was associated with a significantly shorter procedure time, but not fluoroscopy time, compared to the laserballoon.

Summary: Andrade et al. found that initial catheter cryoballoon ablation strategy resulted in lower incidence of persistent atrial fibrillation and lower arrhythmia burden compared to antiarrhythmic drug therapy in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation during 3 years of follow-up. The study builds upon the findings of the EARLY-AF trial and the STOP AF First trial. Due to the relatively small sample size (303 patients) and short follow-up period, it may be difficult to detect mortality benefits of cryoballoon ablation.

Summary: In this multicenter trial, cryoballoon ablation as initial therapy was found to be superior to drug therapy in preventing atrial arrhythmia recurrence in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Serious procedure-related adverse events were uncommon.

Summary: Cryoballoon catheter ablation has been shown to significantly improve arrhythmia outcomes, produce clinically meaningful improvements in patient-reported outcomes, reduce subsequent health care resource use, and not increase the risk of serious adverse events compared with initial antiarrhythmic drug therapy in patients with treatment-naive AF.

Summary: This study evaluated the treatment effect of catheter cryoballoon ablation versus antiarrhythmic drug therapy for initial paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The results showed that in the 3-year follow-up period, the catheter ablation group had a lower incidence of persistent atrial fibrillation and recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmia compared to the drug therapy group. Additionally, the proportion of time in atrial fibrillation was also lower in the ablation group. Therefore, catheter ablation is recommended as the initial treatment for initial paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Summary: Cryoballoon ablation is a reasonable strategy for symptomatic persistent AF in the initial AF ablation procedure, with a high acute isolation success rate. Although there are potential complications and recurrence risks, Cryoballoon ablation has shown good outcomes in the treatment of persistent AF.

Summary: In patients with symptomatic, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, catheter cryoballoon ablation was associated with a significantly lower rate of atrial fibrillation recurrence compared to antiarrhythmic drug therapy. The ablation group also had better outcomes in terms of atrial tachyarrhythmia occurrence and atrial fibrillation burden.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of real-time visualization and mapping of the right phrenic nerve (RPN) by using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) during atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation. The RPN was successfully visualized by ICE in 92% of patients and its distance from the superior vena cava (SVC) was found to have a positive linear correlation with its pacing capture threshold. Guiding SVC isolation by visualizing RPN with ICE was safe and resulted in no RPN injuries.

Summary: This study found that cryoballoon catheter ablation (CA) was superior to anti-arrhythmic drug (AAD) treatment in delaying the progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with paroxysmal AF. Furthermore, the cryoballoon CA had fewer adverse events.

Summary: CB-based PVI is an effective treatment for AF, but the most common complication is PNI. Our study found a high rate of reconnection during repeat procedures. These findings can help identify the optimal dosing protocol in CB-based PVI procedures.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of cryoballoon ablation (CBA) compared to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in treating persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). The results showed that CBA led to shorter procedure and ablation duration, with less atrial flutter recurrence and similar ATA-free survival rate at 12-month follow-up compared to RFA.

Summary: Radiofrequency and cryoballoon catheter ablation demonstrate similar moderate to high durability in pulmonary vein isolation. However, about 5% of patients experienced recurrence of atrial fibrillation despite complete and durable PVI. The reduction in AF burden is associated with the number of durably isolated pulmonary veins.
