Vegetation (and pine needles in particular) has been widely used as an alternative to other conventional sampling devices to assess the atmospheric presence of semi-volatile organic contaminants (SVOCs). While most analytical procedures developed focus only on one or two chemical classes, this this work intends to establish a multi-component protocol to quantify brominated flame-retardants (BFRs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and one class of contaminant of emerging concern, the synthetic musks fragrances (SMCs). Pine needles extracts were obtained by ultrasonic solvents extraction (USE), and different cleanup approaches using solid-phase extraction (SPE) employing combinations of sorbents and solvents as well as gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were tested. SPE with alumina followed by GCP yielded the best results, with average recoveries over 80%. The application of the method under field conditions was proven by the analysis of naturally contaminated samples from 3 sites of different potential exposure (remote, rural and urban). The total detected concentrations ranged from 0.45 to 0.87 ng g (1) dry weight (dw) for BFRs, 0.35 to 1.01 ng g (1) (dw) for PCBs, 0.36 to 12.2 ng g (1) (dw) for HCB, 245.7 to 967.8 ng g (1) (dw) for PAHs and 20.7 to 277.5 ng g (1) (dw) for SMCs. This methodology is a viable approach for the simultaneous analysis of five different classes of atmospheric pollutants employing less analytical efforts. Moreover, to the author's best knowledge, this is also the first time vegetation is employed in the detection of SMCs. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Incorporation of phenolic extracts from different by-products in yoghurts to create fortified and sustainable foods

Sara M. Ferreira, Lucia Santos

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of incorporating agro-industrial by-products into yoghurt as fortifiers and potentially replacing synthetic preservatives. Phenolic extracts were obtained and characterized from each by-product, showing antioxidant and antibacterial properties, as well as the ability to inhibit alpha-amylase. The yoghurts with incorporated extracts maintained their physical-chemical properties and microbiological safety, inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and exhibited similar oxidative results to synthetic antioxidants, indicating the viability of fortifying yoghurts with by-product extracts.

Olive Mill Pomace Extract Loaded Ethylcellulose Microparticles as a Delivery System to Improve Olive Oils Oxidative Stability

Filipa Paulo, Loleny Tavares, Lucia Santos

Summary: The protective effect of ethylcellulose microparticles loaded with olive mill pomace (OMP) as an alternative to synthetic antioxidants against oxidation of olive oils was evaluated. OMP extract was obtained using a solid-liquid extraction technique and encapsulated using a double emulsion solvent evaporation method. Fortification of olive oils with microparticles delayed peroxide formation, reduced content of secondary oxidation products, and slowed down hydrolysis processes. The results suggest that encapsulated extracts rich in antioxidants can be used as an alternative to synthetic antioxidants to enhance oil oxidative stability.

Mutation-class dependent signatures outweigh disease-associated processes in cystic fibrosis cells

Lucia Santos, Rui Nascimento, Aires Duarte, Violeta Railean, Margarida D. D. Amaral, Patrick T. T. Harrison, Margarida Gama-Carvalho, Carlos M. M. Farinha

Summary: The study combines transcriptome and proteome analysis to investigate the global gene expression patterns associated with five prototypical CFTR mutations in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients. Differentially expressed genes and proteins reveal common and mutation-specific changes, highlighting functional signatures that are more associated with the specific molecular defects of each mutation rather than the CFTR loss-of-function phenotype. The analysis of translated-transcripts detected specifically in each mutation provides valuable insights into the pathophysiology of CF and may contribute to the identification of new therapeutic targets and biomarkers for CF.

Highlights on the General Preference for Multi-Over Mono-Coupling in the Suzuki-Miyaura Reaction

Carlos F. R. A. C. Lima, Marco A. L. Lima, J. Ricardo M. Pinto, M. Gabriela T. C. Ribeiro, Artur M. S. Silva, Luis M. N. B. F. Santos

Summary: A systematic synthetic study was conducted to explain the common trend of selectivity towards multi-coupling over mono-coupling in Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. This preference was observed under various reaction conditions, including different halobenzenes, substituents on the boronic acid, and changes in catalyst and temperature. Additionally, it was found that the reaction selectivity increased for more reactive systems and more diluted media. The results provide experimental evidence that the formation of totally substituted coupling product is kinetically favored by the proximity of the regenerated catalyst and the newly formed coupling intermediate.

Influence of the Deposition Rate and Substrate Temperature on the Morphology of Thermally Evaporated Ionic Liquids

Rita M. Carvalho, Candida Neto, Luis M. N. B. F. Santos, Margarida Bastos, Jose C. S. Costa

Summary: The wetting behavior of ionic liquids (ILs) on different surfaces was studied by depositing ILs films using thermal evaporation. The deposition rate and substrate temperature were found to significantly affect the droplet coalescence and morphology. The results showed that an increase in the deposition rate and/or substrate temperature intensified the droplet coalescence on ITO surfaces, while the effect was smaller on the Ag surface due to strong adhesion. Moreover, modifying the deposition parameters resulted in different droplet morphologies for different ILs.

Miniaturized ascorbic acid assay platform based on point discharge atomic emission spectrometry coupling with gold filament enrichment

Yanping Wang, Yuemei Chen, Kejun Li, Jinrong Zhou, Xin Yuan, Mei Zhang, Ke Huang

Summary: In this work, a portable analytical system based on point discharge chemical vapor generation atomic emission spectrometry (PD-CVG-AES) coupling with gold filament enrichment was designed. The highly sensitive analysis of Hg2+ indirectly realized the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The measurement is based on the fact that Ag+ can decrease the concentration of Hg2+ by forming Ag-Hg amalgam in the presence of the reductant SnCl2, while AA can pre-reduce Ag+ to Ag0, leading to the generation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The developed novel analytical strategy broadens the application of microplasma-based AES and offers a higher level of sensitivity compared to current AA detection techniques.
