Summary: This scoping review aims to map and summarise the available literature on heterotopic ossification (HO) following hip arthroscopy. The study found that the use of NSAID prophylaxis can significantly reduce the incidence of heterotopic ossification. Future research should focus on identifying patient clinical and demographic factors that may increase the risk of development of HO, allowing for risk stratification and selection of specific patients who would benefit from receiving NSAID prophylaxis.

Summary: The formation of HO is completed three years after THA, and after this point, HO will not further increase. If HO occurs or increases after more than three years postoperatively, other triggering causes should be considered.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors for heterotopic ossification (HO) after hip arthroplasty. The results showed that patients with underlying osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, spine disease, diabetes, amenorrhea, postmenopausal status, parathyroid disorders, and history of pathologic fracture were more likely to develop HO. Black/African American race, osteoporosis, spine disease, and low estrogen states were identified as significant predictors for HO development. Perioperative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment was negatively correlated with HO formation. These findings suggest that certain patient populations may benefit from HO prophylaxis, such as perioperative NSAIDs.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed data from 205 patients who underwent elbow arthroscopy and found that HO was a minor complication with a prevalence rate of 6.3%. It was usually located in the medial compartment of the elbow. Younger age, longer tourniquet time, and longer surgical time were identified as risk factors for HO formation after elbow arthroscopy.

Summary: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification (HO). This study evaluated palovarotene as a potential treatment for preventing HO in FOP patients. The results showed that palovarotene reduced HO occurrence, but the difference between palovarotene and placebo was not statistically significant. Further research is needed to validate these findings in larger studies.

Summary: This study is the first to investigate the effectiveness of a short course of Celecoxib in preventing heterotopic ossification (HO) in patients undergoing cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). The results showed a significantly decreased incidence of HO in the Celecoxib group compared to the Control group. This study demonstrates that a low dose of Celecoxib for a short period of time can effectively reduce the occurrence of HO following cementless THA.

Summary: In patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the use of licogliflozin led to reductions in serum alanine aminotransferase levels, suggesting it could be a potential therapeutic option. However, further studies are needed to validate these findings and evaluate its combination with other drugs.

Summary: This study found asymmetrical decrease in femoral neck version in unilateral SCFE, with increased differences when including the femoral head's center. The prevalence of femoral retroversion was high in patients with SCFE, especially when using proximal anatomic landmarks. Due to the wide range of femoral version angles, femoral version cannot be predicted in a given hip and must be assessed individually.

Summary: This study utilized 3D computed tomography reconstructions to investigate the changes in acetabular lunate cartilage at different developmental stages and between sexes. Results showed that femoral head coverage decreased with age more significantly in females, while male lunate cartilages were larger in absolute terms. These findings have important implications for understanding acetabular coverage changes in the later stages of pediatric and adolescent development.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impact of acetabular dysplasia and hip instability on outcomes of female patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAI. The findings suggest that female patients with combined LCEA ≤ 25 degrees and AWI <0.35 had worse postoperative outcomes, and an LCEA between 18 degrees and 25 degrees was predictive of poorer results.
