Summary: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical that can be produced from fructose. However, using edible, first-generation biomass as a feedstock has raised concerns about competition with food supply. Using second-generation biomass like miscanthus could be a more sustainable alternative, but there is a lack of information on its environmental impacts compared to high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a feedstock for HMF production.
