Summary: This study reported the structure elucidation and biological evaluations of compounds isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza. Through extensive analysis, their structures and absolute configurations were determined. The evaluation of bioactivities revealed that certain compounds significantly increased cell viability and reduced nuclear transport of a specific protein. These compounds may potentially be potent lung-protective agents.

Summary: The study shows that cysteamine can induce regression of atherosclerotic lesions in LDL receptor-deficient mice, improve lesion stability, reduce oxidized phospholipids, decrease liver lipid levels and expression of specific proteins and cytokines, as well as enhance skeletal muscle function. No changes were observed in plasma lipid concentrations. This suggests that lysosomal oxidation inhibition with antioxidants targeted at lysosomes may be a promising therapy for atherosclerosis in patients.

Summary: Subcritical water extraction (SBWE) of APIs from Salvia miltiorrhiza showed increased extraction efficiency with higher temperatures, especially for tanshinone I. The reproduction inhibition rate of SBWE herbal extracts on Caenorhabditis elegans was higher than that of traditional herbal decoction extracts. SBWE is a more efficient and environmentally friendly method for extracting APIs from medicinal herbs, compared to traditional herbal decoction.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of homoplantaginin and its derivative dihydrohomoplantagin on oxLDL-induced endothelial cell injury and atherosclerosis in apoE-/- mice. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the compounds activated Nrf2 to promote antioxidant responses.

Summary: Eleven previously unreported compounds, including five diterpenoids and six sesquiterpenoids, were isolated from the roots of Salvia prattii. Their structures and configurations were determined using spectroscopic methods and computational techniques. Compound 1 exhibited a novel rearrangement, while compounds 2-3 were examples of arrangement seco-norabietanes. Compound 2 showed potential protective activity against alcoholic liver diseases and could be a novel anti-ALD candidate.
