Organic loading conditions are an important factor influencing reactor performances in methanogenic bioreactors. Yet the underlying microbiological basis of the process stability, deterioration, and recovery remains to be understood. Here, structural responses of the bacterial and archaeal populations to the change of organic loading conditions in a thermophilic anaerobic digester were investigated by process analyses and 16S rRNA gene-based molecular approaches. The biogas was produced stably without the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) at low organic loading rates (OLRs) in the beginning of reactor operation. Increasing OLR in stages disrupted the stable reactor performance, and high OLR conditions continued the deteriorated performance with slight biogas production and high accumulation of VFAs. Thereafter, the gradual decrease of OLR resulted in the recovery from the deterioration, giving rise to the stable performance again. The stable performances before and after the high OLR conditions conducted were associated with compositionally similar but not identical methanogenic consortia. The bacterial and archaeal populations were synchronously changed at both the transient phases toward the deteriorated performance and in recovery process, during which the dynamic shift of aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens including the recently identified Methanomassinicoccus might contribute to the maintenance of the methanogenic activity. The distinctive bacterial population with a high predominance of Methanobacterium formicicum as archaeal member was found for the deteriorated performance. The results in this study indicate the coordinated reorganization of the bacterial and archaeal populations in response to functional states induced by the change of organic loading conditions in the anaerobic digester. Ultrafast Synthesis of Silica-Based Molecular Sieve Membranes in Dielectric Barrier Discharge at Low Temperature and Atmospheric Pressure

Hiroki Nagasawa, Takahiko Kagawa, Takuji Noborio, Masakoto Kanezashi, Atsushi Ogata, Toshinori Tsuru

Summary: The study demonstrates the ultrafast synthesis of silica membranes in atmospheric-pressure, low-temperature plasma, with direct deposition leading to the formation of a thin silica layer on the substrate. Increased deposition temperature improved the inorganic nature of the plasma-deposited layer and enhanced membrane performance. The resulting membranes showed outstanding permeance for small gas molecules, providing a nonthermal alternative for silica-based membranes fabrication.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential industrial application of comammox in producing high-quality nitrate solution for hydroponic fertilizer. Comammox Nitrospira was found to be the main driver of stable and efficient ammonia oxidation in the system. Microbial co-occurrence analysis revealed strong positive correlations between Nitrospira and certain other OTUs, which may help stabilize Nitrospira abundance in the biofilm.

Neotabrizicola shimadae gen. nov., sp. nov., an aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium harbouring photosynthetic genes in the family Rhodobacteraceae, isolated from a terrestrial hot spring

So Muramatsu, Setsuko Hirose, Takao Iino, Moriya Ohkuma, Satoshi Hanada, Shin Haruta

Summary: A novel bacterium strain N10(T) containing bacteriochlorophyll was isolated from a hot spring in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The strain exhibited aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic characteristics and could not grow anaerobically even under illumination. Genome analysis revealed the presence of genes related to bacteriochlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis, light-harvesting complexes, and type-2 photosynthetic reaction centre. Phylogenetic analysis placed strain N10(T) in a distinct lineage near Tabrizicola and Xinfangfangia genera and some species in the genus Rhodobacter. The strain showed low sequence identity with species in the family Rhodobacteraceae based on 16S rRNA gene. Accordingly, a new genus and species, Neotabrizicola shimadae, are proposed for strain N10(T).
