Two separate families of Arobiopsis dynamin-related proteins, DRP1 and DRP2, have been implicated in clathrin-mediated endocytosis and cell plate maturation during cytokinesis The present review summarizes the current genetic, biochemical and cell biological knowledge about these two protein families, and suggests key directions for more fully understanding their roles and untangling their function in membrane trafficking. We focus particularly on comparing and contrasting these two protein families, which have very distinct domain structures and are independently essential for Arobidopsis development, yet which have been implicated in very similar cellular processes during cytokinesis and cell expansion.
