Leaf habit does not predict leaf functional traits in cerrado woody species

Plant species with a high leaf life span (LLS) commonly have a low specific leaf area (SLA), leaf nitrogen per unit mass (N), and phosphorous concentration (P), whereas species with low LLS have a high SLA, N and P. However, LLS tends to be longer in species growing in low-nutrient soils and, therefore, differences in LLS and other leaf traits may not be consistent with a plant classification according to leaf habit. Here we investigated whether leaf habit is consistent with leaf economic spectrum trade-offs in cerrado (a Neotropical savanna) woody species. We analyzed the SLA, N and P of 125 woody species with a distinct leaf habit (deciduous, semideciduous, brevideciduous or evergreen). We also gathered data on the LLS (33 species), maximum net photosynthesis per leaf area (A(area), 56 species) and per leaf mass (A(mass), 31 species), comprising the most extensive database analyzed so far for the cerrado. Differences among leaf habit groups were tested using generalized linear mixed models and ANOVA. We did not find differences in SLA and N among species with a distinct leaf habit, but deciduous species had a higher leaf P concentration than evergreens. Species did not differ in LLS and A(mass), but A(area) varied among groups. Semideciduous species had higher A(area) values than deciduous and brevideciduous species, but all other groups had similar A(area) values. Because of the small difference in the LLS, SLA, leaf N, leaf P and maximum net photosynthesis, we argue that deciduous, brevideciduous, semideciduous and evergreen species may not constitute different functional groups in cerrado woody species.

Importance of local and landscape variables on multiple facets of stream fish biodiversity in a Neotropical agroecosystem

Summary: This study sampled 85 streams in the Upper Parana River basin, Brazil to investigate the effects of local and landscape variables on stream fish biodiversity. The results showed that local variables had a significant contribution to almost all facets of biodiversity, while landscape variables had a minor influence on the alpha-diversity. This suggests that local features play a crucial role in maintaining stream fish biodiversity in agroecosystems.

Influences of multiple anthropogenic disturbances coupled with a tailings dam rupture on spatiotemporal variation in fish assemblages of a tropical river

Summary: The Mariana disaster had a significant impact on the Rio Doce in southeastern Brazil, leading to channel siltation, increased turbidity, riparian damage, and a massive fish kill. This study analyzed the effects of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric dam construction and the rupture of a tailings storage facility on native and non-native fish populations in the middle Rio Doce. The results showed increased non-native fish abundances after the tailings storage facility rupture and changes in fish assemblage composition after both the dam construction and the rupture.

Host life-history traits predict haemosporidian parasite prevalence in tanagers (Aves: Thraupidae)

Summary: This study explored the relationship between avian life-history traits, climate, and the prevalence of Plasmodium and Parahaemoproteus parasites. The results showed that species inhabiting open habitats and species with longer incubation periods had higher parasite prevalence. Additionally, species without migratory behavior, engaging in mixed-species flocks, and with an omnivorous or animal-derived diet had higher prevalence of Plasmodium infection.

Non-native fishes in Brazilian freshwaters: identifying biases and gaps in ecological research

Summary: Brazil has the highest freshwater fish diversity in the world, which has led to an increase in the number of publications about invasive fish in the country. A systematic review of the literature revealed that there are still significant knowledge gaps and biases in the fish invasion literature in Brazil, particularly regarding the impacts of non-native fish species translocated among different regions. This hinders the proper understanding and management of the ecological and socio-economic consequences of fish introductions, especially in biodiverse regions like the Amazon.

Summary: Birds use plumage coloration as an important signaling trait in social communication, and sexual dichromatism is usually attributed to female choice. However, plumage coloration is also influenced by other selective pressures such as parasites and life-history traits. This study found that bird species with a higher prevalence of haemosporidian parasites had more pronounced plumage dichromatism, and high plumage coloration complexity in female tanagers was associated with a longer incubation period.

A framework to apply trait-based ecological restoration at large scales

Summary: Upscaling trait-based restoration to regional levels is necessary for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. A framework is presented to achieve multiple restoration targets using a regional species pool. The framework optimizes functional diversity, composition, and cost, and allows the detection of functionally relevant species in the regional pool that are unavailable on the market.

A finite element analysis of multiphase conjugated flow in diesel and biodiesel-driven engine filtration device

Summary: In this study, particle emission from biofuel consumption was analyzed and simulated to investigate its impacts on the atmosphere, environment, and health. Numerical simulation was conducted for the continuous phase using the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Darcy-Forchheimer model, and the results were consistent with previous literature. A Lagrangian analysis was performed for solid dispersion calculation, providing a better understanding of particle trajectories and enabling a one-way coupling Euler-Lagrangian numerical simulation. A numerical simulator was developed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and verified with existing cases. The Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) model was used to simulate and compare particulate filtering mechanisms of diesel engines, and different filter geometries were evaluated for particle retention rate, resulting in the optimization of DPF channels and reduced particle emission for both diesel and biodiesel fuels.

Fractures at discrete stratigraphic levels have also been found to influence the development of high-permeability zones.

Summary: The Aptian Barra Velha Formation carbonates from Santos Basin in Brazil are characterized by diverse pore types and high heterogeneity due to various factors such as deposition processes, diagenesis, fracturing, and hydrothermal alterations. X-ray computed tomography (CT) combined with digital rock analysis was used to characterize the complex pore networks and mineral phases of the reservoir. This study provides insights into the pore types and multi-scale characteristics of Brazilian pre-salt carbonates, contributing to future work on their connectivity.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of altitude, precipitation, and soil conditions on species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity in subtropical Brazilian Atlantic Forest tree communities. The results showed that species richness decreased with altitude, while phylogenetic diversity increased. Leaf area and seed mass diversity also decreased with altitude. Soil gradients affect diversity, with fertile soils having a wider range of leaf area.

Three-Dimensional Spatial Stability Analysis of the Fundao Dam

Summary: The failure of the Fundao Dam was not identified as a result of slope instability in previous two-dimensional studies, which failed to consider the dam's complex shape and concave and convex regions. This paper presents more rigorous two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses that are better suited for the Fundao Dam geometry. The results show that the dam shape near the setback region requires closer examination using three-dimensional analyses to identify critical zones.
