Background and Aims: Irrigation management requires the collection of up-to-date information that allow growers to make rapid decisions, water potential being one of the most used parameters in irrigation scheduling. The goal of this research was to determine whether predawn (Psi pd) and stem (Psi s) water potential can be used equally well, quantifying the effect external factors have on the relationship between them. Methods and Results: Psi pd, mid-morning (Psi s-m) and noon (Psi s-n) stem water potential were measured at seven cv. Tempranillo vineyards. Climatic conditions, vine growth and fruit load affected daily water potential dynamics. A greater decline of Psi s occurred when temperatures were higher and there was no dew formation, as well as under larger canopies and fruit load. While the relative impact of these variables on water potential was not particularly high, it was by no means negligible. Conclusions: Data collected in this study did not favour Psi pd, Psi s-m or Psi s-n as a preferred measure to evaluate plant water status. It is important to remark that similar Psi pd values do not necessarily indicate the same level of deficit, and that similar Psi s values do not always mean similar water availability. Therefore, a straightforward interpretation of Psi pd and Psi s can sometimes be misleading. Significance of the Study: The results obtained provide significant explanation to the lack of agreement in the literature regarding the most suitable time to measure water potential. Vineyard managers and scientists should select it according to the level of stress expected, climatic conditions and irrigation frequency.

fruclimadapt: An R package for climate adaptation assessment of temperate fruit species

Carlos Miranda, Jorge Urrestarazu, Luis Gonzaga Santesteban

Summary: Climate plays a crucial role in determining the success of growing fruit plant species and cultivars in an area. Assessment of climate adaptation is essential for decision-making in designing fruit orchards and vineyards, as well as evaluating the potential impacts of future climate change on fruit production. Various tools, including bioclimatic indices and plant phenology models, are commonly used to assess climate suitability and provide information on ongoing and future changes. The fruclimadapt software package in R language streamlines the assessment of climate adaptation and identification of potential risks for grapevines and fruit trees.

Grape Cluster Detection Using UAV Photogrammetric Point Clouds as a Low-Cost Tool for Yield Forecasting in Vineyards

Jorge Torres-Sanchez, Francisco Javier Mesas-Carrascosa, Luis-Gonzaga Santesteban, Francisco Manuel Jimenez-Brenes, Oihane Oneka, Ana Villa-Llop, Maite Loidi, Francisca Lopez-Granados

Summary: The research developed an unsupervised and automated workflow for grape cluster detection in red grapevine varieties using UAV photogrammetric point clouds and color indices. The accuracy achieved in grape detection opens the door to yield prediction in red grape vineyards, providing a new pathway for precision viticulture practices. This is the first time that UAV photogrammetric point clouds have been utilized for grape clusters detection.

The role of rootstocks for grape growing adaptation to climate change. Meta-analysis of the research conducted in Spanish viticulture

Summary: Rootstock selection is a crucial decision in vineyard design. This study conducted a meta-analysis of previous research on the implications of rootstock on vine agronomic performance in Spain. The results showed that rootstock characteristics were more dependent on the rootstock itself rather than the Vitis sp. crossing. Additionally, some rootstocks were found to be better suited for future climate change conditions. Combining articles from scholarly and technical journals helped in assessing the effects of different rootstocks, but further steps are needed to facilitate data integration.

Agronomic evaluation of eight 41 B x 110 richter grapevine genotypes as rootstock candidates for mediterranean viticulture

Summary: Choosing the right rootstock is crucial for the profitability of vineyards. However, rootstock-breeding programs have been limited in recent years, resulting in the use of century-old rootstocks that may not be suitable for today's needs. This study evaluated eight new rootstock candidates, resulting from cross-pollination, for their agronomic performance in a vineyard in Spain. The candidates showed a wide range of performance compared to their parents, and two promising candidates (RG8 and RG10) have already started the process of becoming commercial rootstocks.
