Summary: This study examined the changes in insomnia symptoms during the acute treatment of major depressive disorder with antidepressant medication. The results showed that monitoring subjective sleep-onset and mid-nocturnal insomnia throughout the treatment can predict acute remission of depression.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the outcome of acute term treatment for major depressive disorder in terms of psychosocial functioning. Results showed significant improvements in symptoms and disabilities for patients with MDD, but they still did not reach the normative level. Different antidepressant options may have varied effects on treatment outcomes, with SNRI users scoring higher in pain and physical functioning, and SSRI users showing better outcomes in mental health and vitality.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ketamine in the treatment of depression in palliative care settings. The results showed conflicting findings, with some small studies reporting positive effects while larger studies had inconsistent results. Therefore, the efficacy of ketamine in palliative care settings remains unclear.

Summary: Immigrants in Finland are more likely to initiate antidepressant use compared to Finnish-born population, but they also discontinue them earlier. Immigrants from Sub Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Northern Africa are most likely to discontinue antidepressants earlier. More severe depression and longer length of residence in Finland are associated with decreased risk of discontinuation.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aims to determine the influence of general practitioner (GP) and patient sex on the treatment of major depression. It found that female patients were more likely to be prescribed an antidepressant at the time of diagnosis, regardless of the GP's sex. Furthermore, both male and female GPs were influenced by biases and stereotypes that led to differential antidepressant-prescribing behaviors based on the patient's sex and characteristics.

Summary: This study examined the neurocognitive effects of repeated ketamine in participants with comorbid PTSD and MDD, finding that repeated ketamine infusions did not worsen cognition, but instead showed significant improvement in working memory. Additionally, certain neurocognitive performances at baseline can predict the response to ketamine for symptoms of PTSD and MDD.

Summary: This study investigated the safety and efficacy of combining phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitor cilostazol with sertraline in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that patients in the cilostazol group had lower depression severity scores, higher remission rate, and faster response time compared to the placebo group. No serious adverse effects were observed.

Summary: Intravenous subanesthetic doses of ketamine can reduce psychiatric distress in MDD and PTSD patients, but may temporarily impair attention, executive function, and verbal memory in both patient groups. However, these cognitive declines are transient and resolve within 1 day of ketamine administration, with no evidence of long-term cognitive dysfunction.

Summary: The findings suggest that ketamine and esketamine may be more effective than placebo in alleviating acute symptoms of depression. However, there is limited evidence for other glutamate receptor modulators, highlighting the need for more long-term randomized controlled trials to establish comprehensive data on safety and efficacy.

Summary: Major depressive disorders have a significant impact on health and biomarkers have the potential to improve clinical care. However, the field of psychiatry lacks valid biomarkers. This paper critically reviews the field and discusses the potential application of DNA analysis-derived biomarkers. Other potential biomarkers include circulating transcription products, proteins, and inflammatory markers. DNA polygenic risk scores have shown promise in other medical fields and preliminary results suggest they could be useful in depression as well.

Summary: The (S)-enantiomer of ketamine has antidepressant effects in rats by increasing wakefulness and decreasing non-REM sleep, while the (R)-enantiomer does not. This suggests that the (S)-enantiomer may be the active component in the antidepressant effects of ketamine.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between plasma BDNF levels and the effects of repeated-dose intravenous ketamine on anhedonic symptoms in individuals with MDD. The results showed that baseline pBDNF concentrations may predict the antianhedonic effect of ketamine.
