COMPTONIZATION SIGNATURES IN THE PROMPT EMISSION OF GAMMA-RAY BURSTS

We report results of a systematic study of the broadband (2-2000 keV) time-resolved prompt emission spectra of a sample of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected with both Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) on board the BeppoSAX satellite and the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The main goal of this paper is to test spectral models of the GRB prompt emission that have recently been proposed. In particular, we test a recent photospheric model proposed, i.e., blackbody plus power law, the addition of a blackbody emission to the Band function in the cases in which this function does not fit the data, and a recent Comptonization model. By considering the few spectra for which the simple Band function does not provide a fully acceptable fit to the data, we find a statistically significant better fit by adding a blackbody to this function only in one case. We confirm earlier results found fitting the BATSE spectra alone with a blackbody plus power law. Instead, when the BATSE GRB spectra are joined to those obtained with WFCs (2-28 keV), this model becomes unacceptable in most time intervals in which we subdivide the GRB light curves. We find instead that the Comptonization model is always acceptable, even in the few cases in which the Band function is inconsistent with the data. We discuss the implications of these results.

Summary: The Euclid Space Telescope will provide deep imaging and spectroscopy across a large area of the sky, enabling the detection of billions of astronomical sources. To analyze this vast dataset, a novel machine-learning-based methodology called ARIADNE pipeline has been developed. This pipeline combines multiple learning methods to achieve higher accuracy in classifying quiescent galaxies and deriving photometric redshifts.

Summary: The launch of IXPE on December 9, 2021 has provided a new perspective in X-ray astronomy. In this study, we present the first observation results of GS 1826-238, a weakly magnetized neutron star, using IXPE on March 29-31, 2022. The upper limit of linear polarization degree (99.73% confidence level) is found to be 1.3% in the energy range of 2-8 keV. Coordinated observations with INTEGRAL and NICER were conducted simultaneously to constrain the geometry and inclination angle of GS 1826-238.

Summary: This study reports the earliest discovery of bright thermal optical emission associated with short GRB 180618A. The observations suggest that the bright thermal optical counterpart is powered by a rapidly spinning and highly magnetized neutron star, indicating the possible survival of neutron stars after the merger and their ability to power the GRB.

Summary: We present the spectro-polarimetric results of the Cyg X-2 neutron star low-mass X-ray binary observed by IXPE, NICER, and INTEGRAL simultaneously. The broadband spectrum consists of a lower-energy component from the accretion disc and Comptonized emission from a thermal plasma. The polarization measurements in the 2-8 keV band show consistency with previous observations and suggest a spreading layer at the neutron star surface as the main source of the polarization signal.

A flash of polarized optical light points to an aspherical 'cow'

Summary: The Liverpool telescope RINGO3 observed AT2018cow, the closest example of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs), and recorded the highest intrinsic polarization for a non-relativistic explosive transient. The polarization showed a chromatic spike at red wavelengths at 5.7 days post-explosion, before rapidly declining. Another polarization "bump" was observed at blue wavelengths at approximately 12 days, indicating an extremely aspherical geometry for a brief period.

Summary: This paper reports the first detection of polarization in the X-rays for atoll-source 4U 1820-303, obtained with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) at a 99.999% confidence level. The source shows a significant polarization above 4 keV, with the polarization degree increasing with energy. The spectro-polarimetric fit indicates an orthogonal polarization direction between the hard spectral component and the accretion disk.

On the Optical Transients from Double White-dwarf Mergers

Summary: This article characterizes the optical transient expected from double white dwarf mergers and presents simulations of the light curves, spectra, and color evolution of the transient. Based on the estimated merger rate, the absence of detection in current transient surveys is consistent. However, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is likely to detect several hundred mergers per year, providing a new opportunity to study white dwarfs, neutron stars, and Type Ia supernovae.
