During the 2008 September-October outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, the source was observed by both Suzaku and XMM-Newton approximately 1 day apart. Spectral analysis reveals a broad relativistic Fe K alpha emission line which is present in both data sets, as has recently been reported for other neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. The properties of the Fe K line observed during each observation are very similar. From modeling the Fe line, we determine the inner accretion disk radius to be 13.2 +/- 2.5 GM c(-2). The inner disk radius measured from the Fe K line suggests that the accretion disk is not very receded in the hard state. If the inner disk ( as measured by the Fe line) is truncated at the magnetospheric radius this implies a magnetic field strength of similar to 3 x 10(8) G at the magnetic poles, consistent with other independent estimates.

Evidence for a compact object in the aftermath of the extragalactic transient AT2018cow

Dheeraj R. Pasham, Wynn C. G. Ho, William Alston, Ronald Remillard, Mason Ng, Keith Gendreau, Brian D. Metzger, Diego Altamirano, Deepto Chakrabarty, Andrew Fabian, Jon Miller, Peter Bult, Zaven Arzoumanian, James F. Steiner, Tod Strohmayer, Francesco Tombesi, Jeroen Homan, Edward M. Cackett, Alice Harding

Summary: AT2018cow is an extreme fast blue optical transient with a high-amplitude quasiperiodic oscillation in its soft X-rays at a frequency of 224 Hz and a fractional root-mean-squared amplitude of >30%. The high frequency suggests the presence of a compact object, possibly a neutron star or black hole with a mass less than 850 solar masses. This discovery highlights a new method of studying FBOTs using high-time-resolution X-ray observations.

X-ray variability of transitional millisecond pulsars: a faint, stable, and fluctuating disc

Manuel Linares, Barbara De Marco, Rudy Wijnands, Michiel van der Klis

Summary: Transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) are a unique class of neutron stars that exhibit distinct X-ray modes in their accretion disc state. In this study, we analyzed the X-ray variability of three tMSPs and discovered new features that differentiate them from other X-ray binaries. These findings provide insights into the properties of the accretion disc.

Ozbey Arabaci, M. Pahari, L. Rhodes, T. D. Russell, S. Scaringi, J. van den Eijnden, G. Vasilopoulos, F. M. Vincentelli, P. Wiseman

Summary: The transient neutron star binary Swift J1858.6-0814 exhibits wind-formed, blue-shifted absorption lines associated with C IV, N V and He II in time-resolved UV spectroscopy during a luminous hard state. The joint presence of UV and optical wind features reveals a multi-phase and/or spatially stratified evaporative outflow from the outer disc. This persistent mass loss across all accretion states helps to explain the shorter-than-expected duration of outbursts.

A shared accretion instability for black holes and neutron stars

F. M. Vincentelli, J. Neilsen, A. J. Tetarenko, Y. Cavecchi, N. Castro Segura, S. del Palacio, J. van den Eijnden, G. Vasilopoulos, D. Altamirano, M. Armas Padilla, C. D. Bailyn, T. Belloni, D. J. K. Summary: Accretion disks around compact objects may become unstable at high luminosities. The radiation pressure generated by accretion can modify the disk viscosity, resulting in cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales. This phenomenon has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole, and its absence in most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a puzzle. However, we have now observed the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star and found that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum of both black holes and neutron stars can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable.
