The detection by the HESS atmospheric Cerenkov telescope of 14 new sources from the Galactic plane makes it possible to estimate the contribution of unresolved sources like those detected by HESS to the diffuse Galactic emission measured by the Milagro Collaboration. The number intensity relation and the luminosity function for the HESS source population are investigated. By evaluating the contribution of such a source population to the diffuse emission we conclude that a significant fraction of the TeV energy emission measured by the Milagro experiment could be due to unresolved sources like HESS sources. Predictions concerning the number of sources which Veritas, Milagro, and HAWC should detect are also given. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: The study reports anomalously long duration count rate bursts following the impact of cosmic ray showers, termed neutron bursts, near a LaBr3 scintillation detector in Mexico. The characteristic spectra and count rates of these bursts are well explained by neutron absorption in the ground, suggesting similar neutron bursts may be produced by other natural phenomena such as Terrestrial gamma ray flashes.

Summary: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy, offering unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. The observations with CTA will provide insights into gamma-ray absorption, gamma-ray halos, Lorentz invariance violation, and the potential role of axion-like particles in dark matter. The synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities will further advance the field of gamma-ray cosmology.

Summary: The updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) reveals its potential to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, significantly expanding the range of testable models and probing various well-motivated models with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. CTA's survey of the inner Galaxy will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches. Throughout the analysis, attention is paid to quantifying the level of instrumental and background template systematic uncertainties required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies.

On particle acceleration and transport in plasmas in the Galaxy: theory and observations

Elena Amato, Sabrina Casanova

Summary: Accelerated particles are essential for the evolution of the Universe and have been detected in various astrophysical sources both indirectly through non-thermal radiation and directly as cosmic rays on Earth. Recent observations and theoretical studies have provided new insights into the origin and propagation of galactic cosmic rays, shedding light on their interactions with the surrounding environment.

Summary: Observations of 1-100 TeV gamma rays from the 'Cygnus Cocoon' have been reported, likely produced by 10-1,000 TeV freshly accelerated cosmic rays originating from the enclosed star-forming region Cyg OB2. The study reveals the ability of such regions to accelerate particles to high energies, providing insights into cosmic particle transport and historical activity within the superbubble.

Summary: Using the HAWC observatory, no significant excess gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV was observed around high-mass microquasars, setting stringent limits on their emission. Different scenarios were considered, with the result that models suggesting observable high-energy neutrino emission by HMMQs are tightly constrained. The non-detection of VHE gamma rays also challenges the dominance of synchrotron radiation as the microquasar emission mechanism between 10 keV and 10 MeV.

Summary: Magnetar hyperflares are the most likely explanation for fast radio bursts. The first observational evidence supporting this scenario was obtained in April 2020, when an FRB was detected from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154. Follow-up observations by H.E.S.S. provided high-energy gamma-ray observations of a magnetar in a flaring state.

Summary: The HAWC and IceCube observatories have developed a multimessenger joint search for extragalactic astrophysical sources through the AMON framework. Results from archival data collected between 2015 and 2018 show two coincident events with a false-alarm rate of <1 coincidence yr(-1). Real-time implementation of the analysis began in 2019 and issues alerts with an FAR threshold of <4 coincidences yr(-1) through the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network.

Summary: The HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory continuously detects TeV photons and particles, with significant detections of persistent emission from Mkn 421 and Mkn 501. Marginal evidence was also found for three other known high-energy emitters and a collective emission from a set of 30 previously reported very high-energy sources.

Summary: The Earth is bombarded by ultrarelativistic particles known as cosmic rays, believed to have a Galactic origin. The HAWC observatory discovered a gamma-ray source, HAWC J1825-134, extending beyond 200 TeV, coincident with a giant molecular cloud with a high gas density of 700 protons/cm(-3). It is likely that cosmic rays accelerated to energies of several PeV colliding with the ambient gas produce the observed radiation.

A study on performance boost of a 17 m class Cherenkov telescope with a SiPM-based camera

Cornelia Arcaro, Michele Doro, Julian Sitarek, Dominik Baack

Summary: In this report, the performance of replacing PMTs with SiPMs in a 3rd generation IACT array (using MAGIC as an example) is investigated using generalized simulations. It is found that the use of SiPMs can improve sensitivity by a factor of three at the current trigger threshold energy, and the stronger sensitivity of SiPMs in the red part of the spectrum does not affect the performance of IACTs, which is a source of background.

Forecasts analysis on varying-a theories from gravitational wave standard sirens

L. R. Colaco, R. F. L. Holanda, Rafael C. Nunes, J. E. Gonzalez

Summary: Motivated by future gravitational wave observations, this study performs forecast analysis to constrain a possible time variation of the fine structure constant a. By considering mock data from standard sirens and current observations of strong gravitational lensing systems, it is found that future standard sirens observations can also play a significant role in the search for variations of a.

Summary: Binary neutron star mergers and neutron star-black hole mergers can be detected through gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation. Discovering kilonovae will provide valuable insights into element nucleosynthesis and nuclear matter. The unique features of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope allow for the detection of gravitational wave counterparts missed by optical telescopes.

GRMHD study of accreting massive black hole binaries in astrophysical environment: A review

Federico Cattorini, Bruno Giacomazzo

Summary: This article presents recent numerical advances in the theoretical characterization of massive binary black hole (MBBH) mergers in astrophysical environments. These systems are significant sources of gravitational waves (GWs) and promising candidates for multimessenger astronomy. Coincident detection of GWs and electromagnetic (EM) signals from merging MBBHs is a leading area of study in contemporary astrophysics. The scarcity of strong predictions for EM signals before, during, and after merger poses a major challenge in observational efforts. To address this, significant theoretical work has focused on characterizing EM counterparts that accompany GW signals. Full general relativistic modeling using Einstein's field equations coupled with magnetohydrodynamics equations has been key in producing accurate EM predictions. This review explores numerical investigations into the astrophysical manifestations of MBBH mergers and their potentially observable EM signatures.

Avoiding parameter fine-tuning in mass varying neutrino models of DE?

Michael Maziashvili, Vakhtang Tsintsabadze

Summary: Coupled models of quintessence are introduced to avoid or mitigate the parameter fine-tuning problem and also should avoid the fine-tuning problem related to the initial conditions. Coupled models can explain the timescale of the coincidence between dark energy and matter energy densities, as well as the transition of dark energy dominance. Studying the mass varying neutrino model of dark energy with inverse power-law potential helps to understand its naturalness.
