A ionized reflecting skin above the accretion disk of GX 349+2

Context. The broad emission features in the Fe-K alpha region of X-ray binary spectra represent an invaluable probe to constrain the geometry and the physics of these systems. Several Low Mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) containing a neutron star (NS) show broad emission features between 6 and 7 keV and most of them are now interpreted as reflection features from the inner part of an accretion disk, in analogy to those observed in the spectra of X-ray binary systems containing a black hole candidate. Aims. The NS LMXB GX 349+2 was observed by the XMM-Newton satellite which allows, thanks to its high effective area and good spectral resolution between 6 and 7 keV, a detailed spectroscopic study of the Fe-K alpha region. Methods. We study the XMM data in the 0.7-10 keV energy band. The continuum emission is modelled by a blackbody component plus a multicolored disk blackbody. A very intense emission line at 1 keV, three broad emission features at 2.63, 3.32, 3.9 keV and a broader emission feature in the Fe-K alpha region are present in the residuals. The broad emission features above 2 keV can be equivalently well fitted with Gaussian profiles or relativistic smeared lines (diskline in XSPEC). The Fe-K alpha feature is better fitted using a diskline component at 6.76 keV or two diskline components at 6.7 and 6.97 keV, respectively. Results. The emission features are interpreted as resonant transitions of S XVI, Ar XVIII, Ca XIX, and highly ionized iron. Modelling the line profiles with relativistic smeared lines, we find that the reflecting plasma is located at less than 40 km from the NS, a value compatible with the inner radius of the accretion disk inferred from the multicolored disk blackbody component (24 +/- 7 km). The inclination angle of GX 349+2 is between 40 degrees and 47 degrees, the emissivity index of the primary emission is between -2.4 and -2, and the reflecting plasma extends up to (2-8) x 10(8) cm. Conclusions. We compare our results with the twin source Sco X-1 and with the other NS LMXBs showing broad relativistic lines in their spectra. We conclude that the blackbody component in the spectrum is the primary emission that hits the inner accretion disk producing the emission lines broadened by relativistic and Doppler effects dominant around the neutron star.

Summary: The ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is an INAF project that aims to study high-energy astronomical sources in the TeV spectral band. Consisting of a group of innovative Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, the ASTRI MA will be installed at the Teide Astronomical Observatory in Tenerife. With better overall performance than current Cherenkov telescope arrays, the ASTRI MA will be an important instrument for deep observations at energies ranging from approximately 5 TeV to 100 TeV and beyond.

A transient ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 55

Summary: This study reports the identification of a new transient ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX-2) in the galaxy NGC 55. The source was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a lower luminosity, but new observations show that it reaches a peak luminosity above 1.6 x 10(39) erg s(-1). The X-ray spectrum of ULX-2 is softer than in previous observations and can be described by a model with two thermal components. The variability in X-ray emission is likely driven by small changes in the accretion rate or due to super-orbital modulations.

Unveiling the disc structure in ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 55 ULX-1

Summary: This study presents a temporal evolution analysis of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Results show that the spectral components of ULXs are in agreement with the expected L proportional to T-4 relationship from a thin disc model, suggesting a high accretion rate close to the Eddington limit. However, small deviations at the highest luminosities may indicate an expansion of the disc and contributions from wind at higher accretion rates.

Quantum correlations beyond entanglement in a classical-channel model of gravity

Summary: We analyzed NICER observations of SAX J1808.4-3658 and found similar behavior as previous outbursts. After peaking at a luminosity of about 1 x 10^36 erg/s, the pulsar entered a month-long reflaring stage. The average pulsar spin frequency during the outburst was confirmed to match previous measurements, indicating a long-term spin derivative and a rotating magnetic dipole. Furthermore, for the first time in twenty years, the orbital phase evolution showed evidence of a decreasing orbital period, which is influenced by a modulation with a period of approximately 21 years.

Summary: The Athena X-IFU is a high-resolution X-ray spectrometer that has been studied since 2015 for use in the Athena space X-ray Observatory. It uses Transition Edge Sensors (TES) to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV. The X-IFU will be provided by an international consortium led by France, The Netherlands, and Italy, with contributions from several other countries including the United States and Japan.

Spectral analysis of the AMXP IGR J17591-2342 during its 2018 outburst

Summary: The study focuses on the Accreting Millisecond X-ray Pulsar IGR J17591-2342, a Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) system that experienced an outburst in August 2018. By analyzing the X-ray data from multiple observations, the researchers investigated the evolution of the spectral emission during the outburst. The findings suggest the presence of an absorbed Comptonization component with a temperature of 34 keV and a moderately optically thick corona. A Concept of Assessment of LIV Tests with THESEUS Using the Gamma-Ray Bursts Detected by Fermi/GBM

Summary: According to Einstein's theory of relativity, the speed of light is constant in a vacuum. However, quantum gravity effects may cause dispersion in the speed of light depending on photon energy. Studying the spectral lags between gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curves recorded at different energy ranges can provide insights into this phenomenon, if the speed of light is linearly dependent on photon energy and a function of GRB redshift. We propose a methodology using GRB light curves to investigate the dispersion law of light propagation in a vacuum, with the intention of utilizing GRB data collected by THESEUS.
