Summary: The prevalence and frequency of criminal behavior is challenging to estimate due to social desirability bias. The randomized response approach shows potential in criminal justice research, especially when it comes to self-reported data. Our study on prison inmates indicates that self-reported criminal behavior is influenced by social desirability bias, and indirect questioning techniques have potential to advance policy formation in this field.

Summary: In this study, two generalized classes of estimators are proposed to estimate the population variance using ranked set sampling (RSS) and auxiliary information. The bias and mean square errors of the proposed estimators are derived. Simulation results and real-life data application demonstrate that RSS design is more accurate than simple random sampling in determining the population variance of hard-to-measure or destructive sampling units.

Summary: This study proposes a novel differential evolution variant (PDcDE) for the parameter estimation of solar photovoltaic (PV) models. The PDcDE algorithm features an auto-controlled population strategy, a diversity-controlled parameter setting method, and a backward search to enhance its performance. Comparative results demonstrate the superior efficiency and effectiveness of PDcDE in the parameter estimation of PV systems.

Summary: The study found that children with Syrian nationalism have a higher relative risk of acute respiratory infections, while children with other nationalistic backgrounds have double the risk compared to Jordanian children. In contrast, children with Syrian nationalism and other nationalistic backgrounds have lower relative risks of diarrhea compared to Jordanian children. Other-nationalist children also have a lower relative risk of fever than Jordanian children.

Summary: This study investigated the magnitude, distribution, and burden of acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI) among residents of Zhejiang Province, China. The prevalence of AGI was found to be 1.8%, with an estimated 14 million cases in Zhejiang Province. Individuals who performed housework and were unemployed in certain seasons and living in specific cities had a higher prevalence of AGI. More than 50% of AGI cases were attributed to contaminated food. The disease burden caused by AGI in Zhejiang Province was approximately 975 million Chinese yuan (CNY).

Summary: This study introduces a novel scrambling response model and a generalized estimator for handling sensitive variables and variance estimation. The statistical performance of the estimator is analyzed in detail, and comprehensive simulation experiments and empirical analysis are conducted to verify the results. The findings show that the proposed generalized estimator consistently exhibits minimal mean square error under both scrambling response models and provides a high level of privacy protection.

Summary: This paper proposes a goodness-of-fit test method for one-parameter count distributions with finite second moment. The test statistic is derived from the L-1 distance between the probability generating function of the model and the random variable generating the actual data. The test statistic has a simple form and is asymptotically normally distributed under the null hypothesis, allowing for easy implementation of the test. Furthermore, the test is consistent not only for alternative distributions belonging to a certain class but also for all alternative distributions with different probability of zero compared to the null hypothesis.
