The accomplishment of the present study had as objective to map Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) associated to carcass and quality traits in a F2 pig population developed by mating two Brazilian Piau breed sires with 18 dams from a commercial line (Landrace x Large White x Pietrain). The linkage map for this population was constructed after genotyping the 684 animals for 35 microsatellite markers. Data were analyzed by interval mapping using sex, batch and halothane genotype as fixed effects and carcass weight at slaughter, direct carcass weight and slaugher age as covariables. A total of 18 QTL were identified, the QTL for higher backfat thickness on the shoulder region and cooking loss was significant at 5% genome-wise level. The backfat thickness trait was mainly associated with the Piau breed allele, known as a fat pig. The information of the significant QTL detected in this study is useful for future fine-mapping studies for identification of genes and might be used together with traditional selection methods to improve the efficiency of breeding programs, moreover, this information can also provide new insights to the understanding of the physiology of the quantatiative traits in pigs.

Influence of Genotype on Endometrial Angiogenesis during Early Pregnancy in Piau and Commercial Line Gilts

Jose Carlos Montes-Vergara, Jurandy Mauro Penitente-Filho, Mariana Machado-Neves, Lucas Correa Martins Machado, Faider Alberto Castano-Villadiego, Karine Assis Costa, Eduardo Paulino da Costa, Carolina Filardi de Campos, Camilo Jose Ramirez-Lopez, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes, Paulo Savio Lopes, Jose Domingos Guimaraes

Summary: This study investigated the transcript abundance of angiogenesis-related genes in the endometrium of pregnant commercial line and Piau gilts and their relationship with the phenotypic expression of genes important to the endometrium during early pregnancy. The results showed differences in gene expression among gestational ages and between breeds, suggesting an influence of the male genotype on uterine vascularization. The findings provide important insights into the reproductive development of different pig breeds and contribute to the knowledge of pig farming.

Margareth Evangelista Botelho, Marcos Soares Lopes, Pramod K. Mathur, Egbert F. Knol, Fabyano Fonseca e Silva, Paulo Savio Lopes, Simone Eliza Facioni Gimara, Daniele B. D. Marques, Renata Veroneze

Summary: Weighted single-step genome-wide association study (WssGWAS) and post-GWAS analysis can be used to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes linked to boar taint in pigs. In this study, a total of 16 windows on different chromosomes were identified as associated with boar taint compounds, explaining a small percentage of the genetic variance. A total of 128 candidate genes, including five new ones, were also identified in significant QTL regions. The findings provide insights into the occurrence of boar taint and potential targets for selection against it.

Genomic prediction in Brazilian Guzera cattle: application of a single-step approach to productive and reproductive traits

Eula Regina Carrara, Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz Peixoto, Alessandra Alves da Silva, Frank Angelo Tomita Bruneli, Henrique Torres Ventura, Lenira El Faro Zadra, Luiz Antonio Josahkian, Renata Veroneze, Paulo Savio Lopes

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of using single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) for genomic prediction of productive and reproductive traits in Guzera cattle. The results showed that ssGBLUP was feasible and could increase the accuracy of breeding values without significantly impacting predictive ability and bias. Although the number of genotyped animals and the size of the database were small for some traits, the individual accuracies of breeding values were evidently increased in the genomic evaluation.

Estimation of genetic parameters and inbreeding depression in Piau pig breed

Leticia Fernanda de Oliveira, Paulo Savio Lopes, Layla Cristien Cassia Miranda Dias, Leandro Magno Dornelas e Silva, Hugo Teixeira Silva, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes, Daniele Botelho Diniz Marques, Delvan Alves da Silva, Renata Veroneze

Summary: This study estimated genetic parameters, effective population size, inbreeding, and inbreeding depression in Piau pigs. The results showed low direct heritabilities for birth weight and weaning weight, while average pre-weaning daily weight gain showed moderate heritability. There were high genetic correlations between weight at birth and weight at weaning, as well as weight at weaning and average pre-weaning daily weight gain. Inbreeding increased over generations and led to a reduction in effective population size. Inbreeding had a significant effect on average pre-weaning daily weight gain, with a decrease of 0.005 g for every 1% increase in inbreeding coefficient. Increasing effective population size is necessary to control inbreeding and preserve genetic variability in the Piau pig population.

Summary: We estimated the haplotype frequencies of TMEM154 in the US and Brazil Gene Banks using Fluidigm and KASP genotyping methods, and genotyped the ZNF389_ss748775100 deletion variant in Brazilian flocks. The results showed that all Brazilian samples had the I/I genotype for the ZNF389_ss748775100 mutation. There were 25 TMEM154 haplotypes in Brazilian breeds and 4 haplotypes in US breeds associated with susceptibility. This suggests that genetic testing can help improve herd health and productivity by selecting non-susceptible animals as founders.

Summary: This study quantified runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity-rich regions (HRR) in a subpopulation of Guzer & aacute; cattle and examined ROH and HRR islands. The results showed that the inbreeding coefficients determined by ROH were higher than other cattle breeds' and higher than pedigree-based inbreeding in the Guzer & aacute; breed obtained in previous studies. Additionally, genes identified in ROH and HRR islands were associated with dairy and beef traits, reproductive traits, and disease resistance.

Repeatability and random regression models to estimate genetic parameters for oocyte and embryo production in the Gir breed

Renata de Fatima Bretanha Rocha, Pamela Itajara Otto, Marcos Vinicius Gualberto Barbosa da Silva, Marta Fonseca Martins, Marco Antonio Machado, Renata Veroneze, Felipe Damasceno Leandro, Stela Naetzold Pereira, Simone Eliza Facioni Guimaraes, Joao Claudio do Carmo Panetto

Summary: Genetic parameters for oocyte and embryo production in Gir breed were obtained through repeatability and random regression models. The study revealed significant genetic variability and repeatability in the production of oocytes and embryos from Gir donors, suggesting that selection of appropriate donors could lead to greater fertility and genetic progress, particularly at younger ages.
