Summary: The glass transition temperature of metallic glasses can be depressed by up to 40 K by reducing the sample size to below 10 & mu;m, allowing the attainment of glasses with low energy states. The properties of bulk metallic glasses are profoundly affected by reducing the sample size. By systematically reducing the length scale of gold and platinum-based metallic glasses, the vitrification behavior and atomic mobility were studied, revealing size-dependent vitrification kinetics in micrometer-sized glasses.

Summary: Metallic glasses, especially Hafnium based MGs, have superior properties to conventional crystalline metals/alloys, with HBMGs having the additional advantage of high density. However, their glass-forming ability is limited. Our discovery of two HBMGs with a critical casting diameter significantly higher than the current record allows for the production of bigger products and easier manufacturing/processing.

Summary: The addition of a small amount of niobium has a significant effect on the glass transition kinetics and fragility of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 metallic glasses. It narrows the width of glass transition, accelerates the relaxation process, and decreases the energy barrier of glass transition, resulting in a lower fragility and stronger glass performance.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of elastostatic compression (ESC) on the structural state and mechanical properties of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The results showed that ESC can induce either relaxation or rejuvenation depending on the initial energy state of the samples. Materials in the highest and lowest energy states were stable against structural changes, while those in intermediate energy states exhibited both relaxation and rejuvenation after ESC loading. These findings provide new insights into the behavior of BMGs under ESC.

Summary: The newly discovered color-changing metallic glasses can continuously and spontaneously change color under ambient conditions, mainly created by light interference and optical bandgap energy of the oxide layer. The unique qualities of these glasses, including continuous oxidation, uniform oxide layer thickness, and fast color-changing capabilities, are connected to the oxygen affinity of cerium, the glassy structure, and the yttrium dopant regulation. This work not only introduces a new direction for metal oxidation, but also highlights new applications for metallic glass.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations of aluminum near its melting point show a significant increase in vibrational entropy of interstitial defects with dumbbell configuration. By estimating the density of these defects in the melt through three independent methods, the configurational entropy of the system with defects is determined. Approximately 70% of the total entropy of melting can be attributed to the generation of interstitial dumbbells at T = T-m.

Summary: This study conducted parallel measurements of enthalpy and high-frequency shear modulus changes during structural relaxation of five bulk metallic glasses. The analysis revealed a one-to-one correlation between the change in molar enthalpy and the alteration in the calculated number of defects based on Interstitialcy theory. The defect formation enthalpy derived from this correlation aligns well with the accepted quantity in the Interstitialcy theory.

Summary: This study focuses on the fragility of supercooled liquids, demonstrating the relationship between fragility and high-frequency shear modulus. The heat capacity jump is also found to be related to fragility and shear modulus relaxation. The results suggest that the evolution of interstitial-type defects frozen-in during glass production mediates the connection between fragility, heat capacity jump, and high-frequency shear modulus in the supercooled liquid state.

Summary: By performing calorimetric and shear modulus measurements on bulk metallic glasses, this study demonstrates the consistency between the calorimetric determination and calculation of excess thermodynamic potentials, with a focus on the physical origin of these potentials being related to a system of interstitial-type defects frozen-in from the liquid state. The estimates of defect formation enthalpy and entropy indicate that the enthalpy scales with the shear modulus while the entropy is significantly large, aligning with the basic assumptions of the interstitialcy theory.

Summary: Extensive research has revealed that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. The development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalysts can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is crucial for OER. This study utilized a simple two-step hydrothermal method to achieve in situ S leaching and doping, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. The transformed FeOOH and CoOOH exhibited excellent OER activity and could be easily mass-produced using low-cost iron based materials and simple methods.

Summary: Zero-dimensional organic-inorganic metal halides (OMHs) are gaining attention in the fabrication of light-emitting diodes due to their broad emission band and high photoluminescence quantum yield. This work synthesized a zero-dimensional organic tetraphenylphosphonium bismuth chloride (TBC) that showed efficient blue light emission, with the emission mechanism attributed to the transition of Bi3+ ions. White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated using TBC, along with green-emitting and red-emitting single crystals, achieving single-component white emissions. These findings demonstrate the different emission mechanism of ns2 ions-based OMHs and highlight the potential of bismuth-based OMHs in WLEDs applications.

Summary: The revolutionary design concept of high-entropy alloys has brought new opportunities and challenges to the development of advanced metal materials. In this work, AlCrCuFe2NiTix high-entropy flux cored wires were prepared by combining the design idea of a high-entropy alloy with the characteristics of flux cored wire. AlCr-CuFe2NiTix high-entropy surfacing alloys were prepared using gas metal arc welding technology. The wear properties of the alloys were analyzed, and the phase composition, microstructure, strengthening mechanism, and wear mechanism were discussed. The results show that the alloys exhibit a dendritic microstructure with BCC/B2 + FCC phases. Increasing Ti content leads to the precipitation of Laves phase. The alloys show improved microhardness and wear resistance due to the precipitation of coherent B2 and Laves phases. However, excessive Ti addition results in the increase of Laves phase and reduced wear resistance of the alloys.
