Summary: Historically, there have been more graduating head and neck fellows than available academic positions. However, in recent years, there has been improvement in the supply-demand mismatch for academic head and neck jobs. The number of manuscripts published is a significant factor associated with obtaining an academic job post-fellowship.

Summary: Objective: Investigating faculty perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in academic otolaryngology programs. Methods: A quantitative survey was conducted among 16 academic otolaryngology programs using the DEI Inventory. Results: There were no significant differences in DEI scores by race. However, female faculty reported lower perceptions of DEI and higher levels of imposter phenomenon compared to their male counterparts. Conclusion: The results can inform interventions to improve DEI levels among faculty.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of Medicaid expansion on postoperative radiation therapy delay in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Despite the higher rate of PORT delay among Medicaid patients, Medicaid expansion did not have a significant effect on reducing delay. Other factors such as disease stage, number of treating facilities, and comorbidities were associated with PORT delay in the cohort.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a set of criteria and indicators to evaluate the quality of care for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Through a systematic literature review and a two-round Delphi method evaluation, a final set of 29 indicators were identified, covering diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and health outcomes of HNC patients.

Summary: A two-staged reconstructive approach with temporary defect coverage by an artificial tissue substitute is a feasible alternative to immediate reconstruction for HNC patients. Delayed reconstruction did not affect perioperative morbidity, functional outcome, and overall survival when compared to immediate reconstruction.

Summary: This study investigated the clinicopathological features of head and neck dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (HNDFSP) and identified the expression of clinically relevant indicators. The results showed that HNDFSP is rare and challenging to control locally, with a worse prognosis using current treatment strategies. Wide local excision and long-term follow-up are needed, while radiotherapy may improve the prognosis of patients with HNDFSP.

Summary: While surgical therapy for head and neck cancer (HNC) has improved, the focus should also be on supportive pre and aftercare. Nutritional management is challenging due to complications and reduced oral intake, but enteral nutrition is preferred. However, there is a lack of studies, recommendations, and guidelines for HNC patients' nutritional management. This narrative review highlights the need for future research and an algorithm for better nutritional care.

Summary: Advances in treatment deintensification for human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal cancer include the use of transoral surgery to reduce the need for postoperative therapy. Trials have shown high progression-free survival rates for intermediate and favorable risk patients treated with radiation or chemoradiation. Immunotherapy shows promise in first-line treatment of recurrent and metastatic head and neck cancer, particularly in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer.

Summary: Chemotherapy in addition to radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer patients can lead to significantly worse acute symptom outcomes compared to radiotherapy alone, especially during treatment. However, symptoms tend to attenuate in the late post-treatment period, with induction chemotherapy specifically associated with worse numbness and shortness of breath during and after treatment.
