There is evidence that the activation of some receptors of the toll-like family (TLRs) of the innate immune system, and also changes in expression levels of forlchead box p3 (Foxp3) protein, which is found in regulatory T cells (Tregs), could be involved in the development of autoimmunity. We present here a literature review focusing on the interrelationship of dendritic cells, TLRs, Tregs and type 1 interferon in autoimmune diseases, with special interest in lichen planus and lupus erythematosus. Understanding the specific role of each of these factors would help elucidate the obscure aetiology of such diseases and open new perspectives for their management and treatment.
