This study aimed to identify and characterize the cellular and metabolic response in vital organs of Dicentrarchus labrax, after feeding on soy-based diets enriched with different taurine concentrations (T0.2, T0.5, T1.0 w/w). Molecular responses (expression of Hsp70, Hsp90, phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase-p38MAPK and extracellular signal-regulated kinases-ERK1/2) were addressed. Metabolic and antioxidant capacities such as activities of citrate synthase (CS), malate and lactate dehydrogenase (MDH, L-LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) were assessed. The most intense changes were detected in the liver and in the anterior intestine showing that taurine induces important protective biochemical mechanisms. Specifically, in the liver and the anterior intestine, Hsp and MAPK levels, as well as L-LDH activity levels were up-regulated under the effect of taurine diets. T diet had no major effect on the activity levels of CS, SOD and TBARS, except for MDH in the liver and catalase in the anterior intestine, where activity levels of these enzymes were increased under the effect of T0.2 and T1.0, respectively. These results may facilitate monitoring of adequate health status of farmed fish, exploiting the beneficial T effects and could assist at the formulation of aquaculture feeding strategies.

Sex-biased dynamics of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) gene expression patterns

Elisavet Kaitetzidou, Gregor D. Gilfillan, Efthimia Antonopoulou, Elena Sarropoulou

Summary: This study investigated sex-biased mRNA and small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) expression patterns in the brain, adipose tissues, and gonads of the three-spined stickleback. Tissue-specific expression comprising both mRNA and sncRNA between sexes was demonstrated, emphasizing the importance of mRNA-miRNA interactions as well as new presumed genes not yet identified to have gender-specific roles.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of dietary inclusion of insect meal on hepatic pathways of apoptosis and autophagy in three farmed fish species. The results showed that gilthead seabream exhibited both cellular procedures, while European seabass and rainbow trout suppressed apoptosis through induction of hepatic autophagy. The protein abundance analysis revealed that insect meal inclusion resulted in fewer protein changes in gilthead seabream compared to the other two species. This study is the first to demonstrate that insect meal in fish diets can cause changes in liver protein abundances.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of prolonged feed deprivation and water temperature on the antioxidant defense system and apoptotic pathway in meagre fish. The results showed that long term feed deprivation and temperature variations induced oxidative stress and triggered the antioxidant defense and apoptotic machinery in meagre fish. The most significant variations were observed at temperatures below 20°C and above 23°C.

M. I. Tsertou, N. Papandroulakis, K. Keklikoglou, I. Kalantzi, M. Tsapakis, A. Tsalafouta, M. Pavlidis, E. Antonopoulou, P. Katharios

Summary: This study investigates the development of Chronic Ulcerative Dermatopathy (CUD) in cultured meagre fish and finds that the use of borehole water and natural seawater has different effects on the development of the disease. The study also observes that pH and CO2 are not involved in the development of CUD. Additionally, the study shows that the lesions of CUD can be resolved when the fish are transferred to natural seawater.

Summary: In this study, the utilization of carob pods as feeding substrate for Tenebrio molitor larvae was investigated. The results showed that carob pods could beneficially affect the growth, nutritional value, antioxidant status, and cellular responses of the larvae. However, high levels of carob content may have adverse effects due to the presence of carob tannins.

Investigation of systemic granulomatosis in cultured meagre, Argyrosomus regius, using clinical metagenomics

Summary: Systemic granulomatosis is a mysterious disease affecting the important aquaculture fish species, Argyrosomus regius, and its etiology remains unknown. Through amplicon metagenomics analysis of the 16S rRNA gene in fish kidneys, it was found that all fish had similar bacterial communities. The presence of only three significantly enriched OTUs in sick individuals, none of which were known granuloma-causing species, supports the hypothesis of a non-infectious cause of this disease in this fish species.

Summary: Brackish aquaponics using euryhaline fish and halophyte plants have potential as sustainable method for functional food production and high nutritional, commercial, and pharmaceutical value. The study found that sea bass exhibited better growth performance and feed conversion rate at 8 ppt and 14 ppt salinity levels compared to 20 ppt, while rock samphire showed better growth and survival at 8 ppt. Nitrate and phosphorous removal efficiency were higher at 8 ppt and 14 ppt, and essential oil yield of rock samphire was highest at 14 ppt. Overall, this research demonstrates the satisfactory growth performance of sea bass and rock samphire in a tailored brackish aquaponic system.

Summary: Marine biotechnology in the Mediterranean region has great potential for innovation and economic growth, but is currently hindered by a lack of clear value chains and fragmented business initiatives. To address this issue, eight countries established blue biotechnology hubs and identified three promising value chains: algae production, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, and valorization of aquaculture/fisheries/processing by-products. Stakeholder events provided valuable insight and feedback on the necessary skills and potential for development in this field.

Summary: This study used a genetic method to detect the composition of insect meals, successfully identified insect individuals, and analyzed the composition of nine insect meals. Errors in labeling commercially available larvae were detected during this process. No other insect species or animal species than reported were found in commercially available insect meals, while fungal species were identified in non-processed insect meal. Through this study, the use of DNA has been validated as a tool that increases the safety and quality of insect products.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with extracts of pomegranate and onion on meat composition, oxidative stability, cellular signaling pathways, and gene expression. The results showed that the aqueous extract increased moisture content in meat, and protein content in thigh and liver samples. Supplementation with pomegranate and onion extracts improved protein and lipid oxidative stability, enhanced hepatic energy status, and exerted ameliorative effects on stress-related proteins. The encapsulated extract reduced lipid oxidation more effectively, while the aqueous extract had higher total antioxidant capacity and provided better protein protection.

Summary: Cancer, a major cause of global morbidity, has resulted in over ten million deaths in 2020. While chemotherapy treatments have improved, the prevention of cancer remains limited. This study aims to mathematically model cancer cell growth and explores the potential of specific organic compounds to neutralize carcinogens. The results show promise in expanding research into other areas, such as the development of nutritional supplements to inhibit carcinogenesis.
