Arginine silicate inositol complex (ASI; arginine 49.47 g kg(-1), silicon 8.2 g kg(-1), inositol 25 g kg(-1)), a novel composition that is a bioavailable source of silicon and arginine, has potential benefits for vascular and bone health. We have previously reported that bone mineral content increased and the amount of Ca, P, Mg and Mn in the excreta decreased in poultry with ASI supplementation. In the present study, the effect of ASI supplementation at various levels (0, 500, 1000 mg kg(-1) ASI) on growth, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and concentrations of body elements, operculum bone ash and activity of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in rainbow trout was evaluated. Ninety 0+ year-old rainbow trout with initial average weight of 50 +/- 3 g were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, three replicates of 10 fish each. The fish were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with either 500 or 1000 mg of ASI. Body weight gain (P = 0.25), feed intake (P = 0.36) and feed efficiency (P = 0.42) were not signifcantly influenced by the dietary ASI supplementation. Per cent operculum bone ash (634 g kg(-1) versus 558 g kg(-1), P = 0.001) and ALP activity (112 UL-1 versus 92 UL-1, P = 0.001) linearly increased as dietary ASI supplementation increased. Increasing dietary ASI supplementation linearly increased serum and whole body Ca (P = 0.01), P (P = 0.01), Mg (P = 0.05; P = 0.001) Mn (P = 0.05; P = 0.01) and Zn (P = 0.01; P = 0.02) concentrations respectively. In conclusion, ASI supplementation to the basal diet significantly improved operculum bone ash and whole body mineral content in rainbow trout and did not impact feed consumption, weight gain or FCR.

Summary: In this study, a series of novel poly-heterocyclic compounds containing pyridine and furan moieties were synthesized and characterized. The electronic properties, reactivity, cytotoxicity, and pharmacokinetic properties of these compounds were evaluated using experimental and computational methods. The results showed that some of the compounds exhibited potent cytotoxicity and displayed excellent affinity for the active site of the human topoisomerase II ss enzyme.

Effects of Whey Protein Combined with Amylopectin/Chromium on the Muscle Protein Synthesis and mTOR Phosphorylation in Exercised Rats

Kazim Sahin, Cemal Orhan, Oguzhan Ozdemir, Mehmet Tuzcu, Nurhan Sahin, Sara Perez Ojalvo, James R. Komorowski

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of different doses of whey protein and amylopectin/chromium complex on muscle protein synthesis, amino acid and insulin levels, and the mTOR signaling pathway in exercised rats. The results showed that rats that received 3.1 g/kg of whey protein combined with chromium complex exhibited a significant increase in muscle protein synthesis. Additionally, the combination of whey protein and chromium complex had beneficial effects on insulin levels and the mTOR signaling pathway.

Evaluation of pea/rice and amylopectin/chromium as an alternative protein source to improve muscle protein synthesis in rats

Oguzhan Ozdemir, Fusun Erten, Besir Er, Cemal Orhan, James R. Komorowski, Sarah Sylla, Sara Perez Ojalvo, Kazim Sahin

Summary: A combination of amylopectin/chromium complex and pea/rice protein can significantly enhance muscle protein synthesis, increase insulin and musclin levels, and activate the mTOR pathway. These findings suggest that the combination of amylopectin/chromium complex and pea/rice protein can be an alternative for muscle remodeling and repair after exercise.

Effect of dietary stevia and ginger extracts on laying performance, fertility, hatchability, and serum biochemical parameters in laying Japanese quails exposed to heat stress

T. Bayril, F. Akdemir, S. Gurgoze, C. Orhan

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of supplemental stevia and ginger extracts on laying performance, fertility, hatchability, and serum biochemical parameters in laying Japanese quails under heat stress. The results showed that the quails supplemented with stevia and ginger extracts had higher feed intake, egg production, and egg weight compared to the control group. The fertility index and hatching egg weight were also higher in the experimental groups. Furthermore, the supplementation improved selected serum biochemical parameters and mitigated the negative effects of heat stress.

Role of the antioxidant defence system and transcription factors in preventing heat stress in poultry: a dietary approach

Kazim Sahin, Emre Sahin, Patrick B. D. Deeh, Veysi Kayri, Cemal Orhan, Nurhan Sahin

Summary: The main stress factors that disrupt homoeostasis in poultry are environmental, nutritional, microbiological, and managing. Among these factors, high ambient temperatures have a significant impact on poultry production and health. High temperatures lead to oxidative stress and damage the antioxidant capacity of poultry. Nutrients such as vitamins E and C, selenium, and curcumin play a crucial role in enhancing the antioxidant defence system and mitigating the detrimental effects of heat stress.

Mango ginger (Curcuma amada Roxb.) may alleviate the effect of high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced diabetes by activation of the GSK-3β/Fyn/Nrf2 pathway

Emrah Yazici, Emre Sahin, Nurhan Sahin, Mehmet Tuzcu, Kazim Sahin, Cemal Orhan

Summary: Mango ginger extract has potential antidiabetic effects by reducing serum glucose, insulin, free fatty acid, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, increasing total antioxidant capacity, and decreasing malondialdehyde levels. It can also alleviate hepatocellular fat accumulation and promote the upregulation of heme oxygenase 1 in the liver through the regulation of GSK-3 beta/Fyn/Nrf2 signaling pathway.
