Offshore and open sea suspension-culture of mussels is largely in development but, in this particular environment, sleeved mussels are submitted to high-energy oceanographic conditions which could increase fall-offs. In this study, we compared the performance of open sea mussel culture to that of culture in a lagoon environment. Byssus attachment strength, condition index, mechanical properties of individual byssal threads, metal content of the filaments for mussels from both the open sea and the semi-closed lagoon sites were monitored as well as the environmental characteristics of these sites. The spawning event occurred approximately one month earlier for mussels in the open sea than in the lagoon, probably due to a difference in temperature and food availability. The attachment strength of the mussels was weaker in the open sea, even if individual threads were bigger and stronger than in the lagoon. This lower attachment strength seems related to a lower production of byssal threads. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: Eumelanin, a macromolecular biopigment, shows promising potential for sustainable organic electronics. The structure-property relationships in eumelanin films were investigated through spin coating processes in different environmental conditions, revealing that the morphological changes are due to a combination of self-assembly and polymerization processes. Preliminary electrical measurements were conducted on the films to further explore their technological potential.

Summary: This study compared the performance and efficiency of hydrogen-bonded and ionically bonded complexes during the surface-relief grating (SRG) inscription process, finding that ionically bonded complexes exhibit better performance, attributed to their liquid crystal structure. The dominant process in hydrogen-bonded complexes is fast trans-cis or angular hole burning, while the slow angular redistribution process plays a greater role in ionically bonded complexes, ensuring their superior SRG efficiency.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of three common types of collectors on the molecular orientation and structure of fibers using polarized confocal Raman spectromicroscopy, revealing a clear correlation between the choice of collector, induced molecular orientation, fraction of trans conformers, and degree of crystallinity within fibers. The quantitative structural information obtained by Raman provides a general description of the mechanism of action of collectors based on the additional strain they exert on the forming fibers.

Probing interfacial interactions and dynamics of polymers enclosed in boron nitride nanotubes

Summary: Understanding interfacial interactions in polymer systems is crucial for their applicability, and encasing polymers in boron nitride nanotubes allows for studying the effect of these interactions on the glass transition temperature using infrared spectroscopy. The volume of the inner channel in the nanotubes allows for polymer expansion, with different polymers showing varying degrees of interaction with BNNTs and changes in T-g. This method, applicable to most soluble polymer materials, can also be used for studying photoinduced transitions in photoactive polymers due to the transparency of BNNTs at visible wavelengths.

Triploidy in Mytilus edulis impacts the mechanical properties of byssal threads

Kevin Osterheld, John Davidson, Luc A. Comeau, Tiago Hori, Jose M. F. Babarro, Christian Pellerin, Isabelle Marcotte, Rejean Tremblay

Summary: A major problem in mussel farming is the fall-off of mussels from mussel socks due to weakened byssal threads, especially after spawning events. In recent decades, efforts have been put into producing triploid bivalves, which have lower reproductive investment. This study compared the byssal properties and energetic rates of triploid and diploid 1-year-old mussels (<30-mm). The results showed that triploid mussels produced more threads, had stronger byssal threads, and had higher clearance rates and scope for growth compared to diploids.

Diet-egg relationships and equilibration of fatty acids in eggs of southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma

Hunter S. Bailey, Ashley N. Fincannon, Lee A. Fuiman

Summary: This study investigated the transfer of fatty acids from broodstock diets to eggs and the time needed for the eggs to equilibrate to the diet in Southern flounder. The findings indicate that different diet treatments significantly affect the fatty acid composition of eggs, and it takes 8-16 weeks for the eggs to adapt to changes in the adult diet. These results are important for improving broodstock diets and feeding protocols in stock-enhancement programs.
