Summary: Microplastic pollution is a global concern for the environment and human health. In order to assess the potential hazards associated with high concentrations of microplastics, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of exposure concentrations. Infrared and near-infrared microspectroscopies have been used to analyze microplastics in various matrices, and recent advances in technology have allowed for the use of multivariate and machine learning algorithms. This article provides an up-to-date review of the literature on measuring microplastic exposure using infrared spectroscopy and highlights the recent advancements in this field.

Summary: The research aims to engineer desired molecular sp(2) structures in graphene oxide by controlled oxidation of graphite powder, in order to achieve tunable chemical and microstructural properties for optoelectronics or sensing applications. Experimental results show that different concentrations of potassium permanganate and potassium hydroxide can change the microstructural and chemical properties of GO, leading to significant enhancement of photoluminescence and introduction of additional electronic energy levels for tuning the functional properties of GO.

Summary: A spectral analysis tool called SpecQuant has been developed to identify and quantify gas-phase species from complex infrared spectra. It can handle both reference and experimental data with varying resolution and instrumental lineshape. The software uses classical least squares model and reference spectra to determine the mixing ratio of each species along with its estimation error. SpecQuant also provides visual inspection of the fit and residuals by displaying the calculated mixing ratio versus experimental data for each analyte.

Summary: Early and accurate detection of colorectal cancer is crucial for prognosis and clinical management. Current diagnostic methods often lack sensitivity and specificity, highlighting the need for more accurate alternatives. This study presents support vector machine and feedforward neural network models using Fourier transform infrared spectral data to predict the classification of colorectal tissues. The results demonstrate the importance of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared enhanced by artificial intelligence tools for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Summary: A new method of reflection anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) has been developed, which utilizes a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer for increased mid-IR efficiency. The use of a photoelastic modulator (PEM) in the optical setup allows for modulation of the linear polarization direction of the probe beam. An original measurement algorithm is proposed to account for the spectral inhomogeneity of the PEM efficiency and preserve the sign of the RAS signal. The application of this method to layered black phosphorus enables characterization of anisotropic interband transitions in this graphene-like semiconductor crystal.

Summary: We report an artifact arising from the back reflection in Fourier transform spectrometers. When samples are oriented normal to the incoming modulated beam, a certain percentage of light can reflect back to the interferometer and be modulated again, resulting in light appearing at twice its true frequency. We have successfully eliminated this artifact by implementing a rotation stage beneath the sample holder.

Summary: Plastics are increasingly used in modern and contemporary art and design, posing a challenge for heritage conservation due to degradation issues. Infrared spectroscopy is a well-established method for analyzing polymeric materials, but limitations exist for in situ investigation of fragile or degraded plastics. Reflectance spectroscopy offers a potential alternative for rapid measurements with minimal contact, though spectral interpretation can be challenging.Comparative studies between different reflectance FT-IR modes, such as ER FT-IR and DRIFTS, have not been extensively explored yet, and this study contributes to a better understanding of their application in plastic analysis.

Summary: This study tested a saliva samples preparation method for oral and oropharyngeal cancer diagnosis using micro-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. Biomarker bands for cancer classification were identified, with a significant vibrational band at 2064 cm(-1) observed in both datasets. The oral and oropharyngeal cancer could be differentiated with 90% accuracy using micro-Raman data and 82% accuracy using FT-IR data.
