We present in this paper an active waveguide effect observed in porous anodic alumina (PA), which can be applied in optical sensors. The spectral position, shape, and polarization effect of the narrow waveguide modes is described. An analytical test with a commercial pesticide was performed. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.
