The ferromagnetic response from Co-doped CeO2 epilayers is shown to be linked to the formation of Co metallic nanowires (diameters in the 3-7 nm range) within the oxide matrix. These results (i) illustrate the key role of the shape anisotropy of metallic inclusions in diluted magnetic oxides (DMO), (ii) stress the importance to monitor the out-of-plane response of DMO, and (iii) suggest that some dilute systems previously thought to be intrinsic ferromagnet may be reexamined. Marcel Hennes, Benedikt Roesner, Valentin Chardonnet, Gheorghe S. Chiuzbaian, Renaud Delaunay, Florian Doering, Vitaliy A. Guzenko, Michel Hehn, Romain Jarrier, Armin Kleibert, Maxime Lebugle, Jan Luning, Gregory Malinowski, Aladine Merhe, Denys Naumenko, Ivaylo P. Nikolov, Ignacio Lopez-Quintas, Emanuele Pedersoli, Tatiana Savchenko, Benjamin Watts, Marco Zangrando, Christian David, Flavio Capotondi, Boris Vodungbo, Emmanuelle Jal

Summary: This study utilized an X-ray streaking technique to investigate changes in electrons and spins in magnetic thin films. The results showed that the absorption and magnetic circular dichroism dynamics are dependent on the probing wavelength, with indications of more complex changes that require further research.

Mn- or Cu- substituted LaFeO3-based three-way catalysts: Highlighting different catalytically operating modes of La0.67Fe0.8M0.2O3 (M=Cu, Mn)

Shreya Nandi, Jiang Xiang Wu, Pardis Simon, Nicolas Nuns, Martine Trentesaux, Asma Tougerti, Emiliano Fonda, Jean-Sebastien Girardon, Jean-Francois Paul, Anne-Sophie Mamede, Elise Berrier

Summary: This study investigates the redox behavior of Cu- or Mn-doped LaFeO3-based perovskite powders under TWC conditions, revealing fundamentally different structures. Cu-dLFO demonstrates the expulsion of Cu2+ cations as segregated CuO phase, while Mn-dLFO stabilizes most Mn3+ cations within the perovskite solid solution, with additional iron exsolution. Both catalysts show redox activity during CO oxidation/NO reduction, with varying operating modes based on their different structures.

Induced magnetization in Cu atoms at the Fe-Co/Cu3Au(001) interface: X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments and theoretical results

Sofia O. Parreiras, Luis A. Cabral, Rodrigo Lourenco, Alexandre A. C. Cotta, Pedro Schio, Julio C. Cezar, Pedro L. Gastelois, Edison Z. da Silva, Waldemar A. A. Macedo

Summary: The magnetization induced in Cu atoms at the interface between FM Fe/Co ultrathin films and a NM Cu3Au substrate was studied, revealing the origin of magnetic proximity effects at FM/NM interfaces through first principles calculations and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The results show that magnetism is introduced in Cu and Au atoms at the very surface of the substrate, with the Cu XMCD signal being attributed to only 0.5 ML magnetic Cu atoms.

Summary: This paper presents a new setup for measuring element-specific ultrafast magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films with sub-15-fs time resolution. The experiment utilizes a split and delay approach to fully exploit the shortest X-ray pulses delivered by X-ray Free Electrons Lasers in an X-ray pump - X-ray probe geometry. The setup's performance is demonstrated by measuring the ultrafast elemental response of Ni and Fe during demagnetization processes in ferromagnetic samples.

Element-selective analysis of ultrafast demagnetization in Co/Pt multilayers exhibiting large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

M. Hennes, G. Lambert, V. Chardonnet, R. Delaunay, G. S. Chiuzbaian, E. Jal, B. Vodungbo

Summary: In this study, time-resolved resonant magnetic scattering experiments were used to investigate the laser induced demagnetization of Co/Pt multilayers with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The results showed that after femtosecond laser irradiation, both Co and Pt components displayed a similar loss of magnetic order, but with a small delay in the Pt magnetization quenching compared to Co. Comparing the experiments with literature results suggested that the different constituents in these 3d-5d multilayers and alloys remained strongly coupled after optical excitation.

Investigating Coherent Magnetization Control with Ultrashort THz Pulses

Xuan Liu, Emmanuelle Jal, Renaud Delaunay, Romain Jarrier, Gheorghe Sorin Chiuzbaian, Gregory Malinowski, Torsten Golz, Ekaterina Zapolnova, Rui Pan, Nikola Stojanovic, Jan Luening, Boris Vodungbo

Summary: The experiment conducted at the THz beamline of the free electron laser FLASH at DESY demonstrated tunable terahertz radiation source and synchronized free-electron laser X-ray pulses for resonantly probing the magnetization state of a ferromagnetic film. By exciting a thin Permalloy film with different THz wavelengths, researchers observed demagnetization dynamics that depended on the fundamental wavelength of the undulator source, allowing reconstruction of the temporal profile of the electric field of the THz pump pulse.

Analytic description and optimization of magneto-optical Kerr setups with photoelastic modulation

Katherine Legare, Valentin Chardonnet, Ivette Bermudez Macias, Marcel Hennes, Renaud Delaunay, Philippe Lassonde, Francois Legare, Guillaume Lambert, Emmanuelle Jal, Boris Vodungbo

Summary: This paper presents a theoretical optimization of common setups based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect, considering different detection schemes and the inclusion of a photoelastic modulator and a lock-in amplifier. The expressions derived using Jones formalism link the measured signal intensity to the magneto-optical Fresnel reflection coefficients, allowing for the definition of optimal configurations. Experimental results show that setups based on polarizing beam splitters offer higher signal and improved signal-to-noise ratio compared to commonly used analyzers.

Summary: The introduction of free-electron lasers (FELs) in the soft- and hard-x-ray spectral regions has revolutionized the study of electronic, magnetic, and structural dynamics with high time resolution. FELs have greatly enhanced the capabilities of several analytical techniques, particularly in the area of transverse coherence. This paper demonstrates the generation of highly longitudinally coherent pulses in the water window and beyond using the nonlinear harmonic regime of seeded FELs, and presents the results of two proof-of-principle experiments.
