Complete sets of elastic, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties of flux-grown rhombohedral PMN-(28-30)%PT and orthorhombic PMN-32%PT single crystals, poled along the [011]-thickness direction, have been determined. This crystal cut exhibits very high longitudinal-extension, transverse, and shear piezoelectric properties when existing in the rhombohedral state (for PMN-28%PT and PMN-30%PT) but much inferior properties when existing in the ovepoled orthorhombic state (notably for PMN-32%PT). Careful control of crystal composition and poling conditions is thus important when using PMN-PT single crystals in piezoelectric devices. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
