The simultaneous determination of trace amounts of Pb2+ and Cd2+ with montmorillonite-bismuth-carbon electrodes was developed. Several parameters affecting the stripping current response were investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the modified electrode showed a good linear response to Pb2+ and Cd2+ in the concentration range from 1 to 24 mu g L-1. The detection limits were 0.2 mu g L-1 for Pb2+ and 0.35 mu g L-1 for Cd2+. The proposed method was applied for determining Pb2+ and Cd2+ contents in real water samples. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
