Isolates of the causal ascomycete of grapevine powdery mildew, Erysiphe necator, correspond to two genetically differentiated groups (A and B) that coexist on the same host. This coexistence was analyzed by investigating temporal changes in the genetic and phenotypic structures of E. necator populations during three epidemics. Group A was present only at the start of the growing season, whereas group B was present throughout all three epidemics. Group A was less aggressive in terms of germination and infection efficiency but was more aggressive than group B in terms of the latency period, lesion diameter, and spore production. Our results are consistent with a temporal differentiation of niches, preventing recombination, and suggest an association between the disease level and the frequencies of genetic groups.

Europe as a bridgehead in the worldwide invasion history of grapevine downy mildew, Plasmopara viticola

Summary: The study reveals that invasive downy mildew populations worldwide have very low genetic diversity and little evidence of admixture. After initial introduction into Europe, invasive European populations served as a secondary source of introduction into vineyards worldwide, including China, South Africa, and Australia.

Optical, structural and aging properties of Al/Sc-based multilayers for the extreme ultraviolet

Jennifer Rebellato, Regina Soufli, Evgueni Meltchakov, Eric M. Gullikson, Sebastien de Rossi, Cedric Baumier, Florian Pallier, Franck Delmotte

Summary: This study presents the structural characterization of Al/Sc-based periodic multilayer coatings for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, revealing the layer structure and interfacial effects, as well as onset of crystallization. The Al/Sc layer model is validated and refined through EUV reflectance measurements across an extended wavelength range. The study also explores the aging properties and spectral response of optimized two-and tri-material multilayers, including Al/Sc, Al/Sc/SiC, and Mo/Al/Sc, using similar EUV reflectance measurements.

Summary: We have developed a new method to determine the photoabsorption at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths longer than 20 nm, overcoming the issue of multiple reflections. The method provides accurate results and has been validated on aluminum thin films. This advance is important for accurately measuring refractive index values of important materials in optical instrumentation.

The Characterization of Pathotypes in Grapevine Downy Mildew Provides Insights into the Breakdown of Rpv3, Rpv10, and Rpv12 Factors in Grapevines

Manon Paineau, Isabelle D. Mazet, Sabine Wiedemann-Merdinoglu, Frederic Fabre, Francois Delmotte

Summary: This research describes a standardized method for characterizing the virulence profile of the grapevine downy mildew pathogen Plasmopara viticola. By inoculating 33 European strains onto six grapevine varieties with different resistance factors, the researchers were able to assess sporulation levels and the intensity of the grapevine hypersensitive response. They identified multiple pathotypes and detected breakdown of resistance in certain strains. This method enables early detection of resistance breakdown and monitoring of pathogen evolution.

Summary: Al/Mo/SiC periodic and aperiodic multilayers were optimized and deposited on high groove density gratings to achieve broadband efficiency in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). The influence of the number of deposited periods on the initial profile and diffraction efficiency was studied, and models and simulations were compared with experimental data.
