Summary: Wild grapevine, especially V. sylvestris from Croatia, shows resistance to powdery mildew. This study identified resistant seedlings and in situ genotypes based on specific markers. The findings provide evidence of powdery mildew resistance in the eastern Adriatic V. sylvestris germplasm.

Summary: This study compared the hormonal profiles in tolerant and susceptible grape varieties upon infection with Erysiphe necator. The results showed that tolerant varieties had a specific hormonal combination that allowed for a faster and more efficient response against powdery mildew. The balance of different phytohormones plays a crucial role in determining tolerance or susceptibility.

Summary: Grapevine powdery mildew is a major fungal disease of grapevine globally, causing significant yield reductions and quality issues with intensive spraying programs leading to resistance development. There is a need for the development of effective molecular methods for monitoring and detection of resistance in biotroph pathogens.

Summary: This study presented the complete genome assembly of an isolate of Erysiphe necator identified in China, predicting 7,235 protein-coding genes. This information will facilitate the study of genome evolution and pathogenicity mechanisms of E. necator and other powdery mildew species through comparative genome sequence analysis and other molecular genetic tools.

Summary: A strong and rapid resistance to powdery mildew was found in a grapevine, which can effectively stop over 97% of the pathogen's infection attempts. The resistance is effective on various parts of the plant and against different strains of the pathogen. The resistance gene (REN12) was identified and mapped to a specific location on chromosome 13, explaining most of the observed phenotypic variation.

Summary: Spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) is a promising tool for crop pest protection by utilizing exogenously applied double-stranded RNA to reduce pest target gene expression. This study optimized SIGS methods for powdery mildew fungi and identified important gene targets and processes for powdery mildew control. The efficacy of SIGS on powdery mildew makes it an exciting prospect for commercial powdery mildew control.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of eight combinations of natural products with chitosan oligomers in controlling powdery mildew. The study finds that combinations of chitosan oligomers with secondary metabolites of Streptomyces spp. and chitosan oligomers with hydrolyzed gluten show the best results. These formulations have comparable efficacy to conventional antifungals and provide an interesting alternative for disease control.

Summary: Transgenic expression of the WRKY transcription factor gene VqWRKY31 from the PM-resistant species Vitis quinquangularis enhanced resistance to powdery mildew in V. vinifera by activating salicylic acid defense signaling and promoting the synthesis of specific disease resistance-related metabolites. These findings have important implications for molecular breeding strategies to produce PM-resistant grapevine germplasm.

Summary: Grapevine is a major fruit crop worldwide, but powdery mildew is a significant disease affecting grape yield and quality. Most commercial grapevine cultivars are highly susceptible to powdery mildew, requiring the use of pesticides that have negative impacts on health and the environment. Therefore, new grapevine cultivars with genetic resistance to powdery mildew are needed for sustainable viticulture.

Summary: This study analyzed the transcriptome and metabolome of grapevine berries infected with powdery mildew, revealing that while the berries activated defense mechanisms, they were not sufficient to restrict fungal growth. Potential metabolic biomarkers such as gallic, eicosanoic, and docosanoic acids and resveratrol were identified, which can be used to monitor early stages of infection.

Summary: This study presents the structural characterization of Al/Sc-based periodic multilayer coatings for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, revealing the layer structure and interfacial effects, as well as onset of crystallization. The Al/Sc layer model is validated and refined through EUV reflectance measurements across an extended wavelength range. The study also explores the aging properties and spectral response of optimized two-and tri-material multilayers, including Al/Sc, Al/Sc/SiC, and Mo/Al/Sc, using similar EUV reflectance measurements.

Summary: This research describes a standardized method for characterizing the virulence profile of the grapevine downy mildew pathogen Plasmopara viticola. By inoculating 33 European strains onto six grapevine varieties with different resistance factors, the researchers were able to assess sporulation levels and the intensity of the grapevine hypersensitive response. They identified multiple pathotypes and detected breakdown of resistance in certain strains. This method enables early detection of resistance breakdown and monitoring of pathogen evolution.

Summary: Al/Mo/SiC periodic and aperiodic multilayers were optimized and deposited on high groove density gratings to achieve broadband efficiency in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). The influence of the number of deposited periods on the initial profile and diffraction efficiency was studied, and models and simulations were compared with experimental data.
