Summary: This study investigated the timing of preoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnosis and its association with prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA). The results showed that patients with UTI diagnosed within 1 week prior to TKA and within 1-2 weeks prior to THA had an increased risk of postoperative PJI. However, antibiotic prescriptions did not appear to mitigate this risk.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed over 7000 cases of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total knee arthroplasty. The incidence rate of PJI was 0.5%, and Staphylococcus aureus was the most commonly isolated pathogen. The success rate of the I&D and implant retention procedure (DAIR) was 82.6%, but lower than two-stage exchange arthroplasty.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the incidence and trends of pathogens responsible for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) over three decades. The results showed a increasing incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus PJI and a decreasing incidence of coagulase-negative staphylococci PJI. Identifying these trends may help with the prevention and treatment of PJI.

Summary: The study found that the number of patient-reported drug allergies may be associated with infection and functional outcomes, with patients reporting more allergies at higher risk of PJI following joint replacement surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for low- and high-grade prosthetic joint infection (PJI) within the first postoperative days following primary total hip/knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA). The results showed that persistent wound drainage (PWD) and leukocyte count product were associated with the risk of infection in different PJI groups.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between prednisone dosage and rates of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The study found that patients receiving prednisone therapy were at increased risk of PJI and sepsis, but no dose-dependent relationship between prednisone and infectious complications was identified.

Summary: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a significant complication of primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with implications for patients and healthcare systems. Understanding the risk factors associated with PJI after TKA is crucial for minimizing (ideally preventing) this complication.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the outcome and predictors of septic failure following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in patients with prior septic arthritis. The results showed that male gender, end-stage renal disease, multiple debridement surgeries, and polymicrobial septic arthritis were independent risk factors for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI).

Summary: Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) can lead to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), and risk factors such as general anesthesia and prolonged operative time play a significant role in its development. Conversely, tranexamic acid (TXA) administration is thought to effectively reduce the risk of PJI.

Summary: This cohort study revealed higher incidence rates of PJIs in the early and delayed post-TKA period, with differences in microbiological cultures and associated factors in each postoperative period.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the decrease in infection rate over time within a large national database, considering available confounding variables. The study found that the overall infection rate for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) trended downward, but showed almost no changes over a 15-year time period. Therefore, further investigation is warranted to identify influential factors in preventing periprosthetic joint infection and to improve patient selection for primary hip and knee arthroplasty.

Summary: This study compared the surgical treatment of post-operative infections between hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA), finding that the infection control rate was significantly higher in the HRA group and the Oxford-12 score was better in the HRA group than in the THA group.
