Summary: Early detection and prompt response are crucial in preventing and controlling outbreaks. This study evaluates the performance of the Communicable Disease Surveillance System (CDSS) in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, finding deficiencies in surveillance guiding manuals, data analysis, epidemic preparedness, feedback, and standard guidelines. Strengthening the CDSS in this region requires continuous feedback, supervision, well-trained staff, and coordination between researchers and physicians.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused an unprecedented global crisis. The virus primarily infects the lungs by binding to the ACE-2 cell receptor on the surface of alveolar epithelial cells. Interestingly, this receptor is also found in the epithelial cells of the intestinal tract. Recent data suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in modulating inflammation. Gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, are often observed in infected individuals, and there is evidence that the virus can spread through fecal-oral transmission.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases, including Chron's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic immune-mediated diseases of the intestinal tract. Dietary therapy has been shown to be crucial in managing symptoms and pathology of IBD, although there is currently no specific therapeutic diet. Further research is needed to determine the appropriate amount and type of fiber intake for IBD patients.

Summary: Radiotherapy-induced mucositis (RIOM) is a common side effect of anti-neoplastic treatments, affecting patients' quality of life and treatment response. Recent evidence suggests that natural compounds can potentially prevent and treat this damage without compromising treatment efficacy.

Summary: The bacteria in the human body, especially the gut microbiome, play an important role in respiratory diseases such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. This article summarizes the evidence and discusses the impact of altered gut microbiome on these diseases and their comorbidities, as well as the potential of manipulating the gut microbiome for therapeutic purposes.

Summary: This study investigated the phylogenetic dynamics of P. copri in patients with IBS, IBD, and healthy volunteers. Results showed longer genetic distances between IBD and healthy volunteers, as well as between IBD and IBS, indicating higher genetic variability in P. copri sequences within IBD. Different strains of P. copri were found in IBS patients, and a correlation between isolates and disease grading was observed. Understanding the phylogenetic characteristics of P. copri is important for better understanding the interactions between microbiota and the pathophysiology of IBD and IBS.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of anorexia, hypophagia, and cachexia in patients with gastrointestinal or lung cancer at time of diagnosis. The results showed that 68% of patients had cachexia, 57% had anorexia, and 48% had hypophagia. These conditions had negative impacts on patients' nutritional intake, indicating a need for early multimodal strategies to improve food intake.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. The exact cause of IBS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of factors such as abnormal gut motility, inflammation, increased intestinal permeability, and sensitivity. Diet and gut microbiota have also been identified as important contributors to IBS. This review examines the effects of dietary components, functional foods, prebiotics, probiotics, and symbiotics on symptoms and gut microbiota in individuals with IBS-C.
