Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between race and all-cause mortality among non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who received immunotherapy. The results showed that Non-Hispanic Black patients had a lower risk of death compared to Non-Hispanic White patients. Among those with comorbidities and living in regions with lower median income, Non-Hispanic Black patients had a lower risk of death. Overall, NH-Black patients experienced higher survival compared with NH-White patients.

Summary: The study found that in early-stage NSCLC surgical treatment, the surgery rate was higher for White patients than Black patients, and the racial gap narrowed in most facilities. However, in some regions and facility types, the disparity actually widened, especially in facilities with lower patient volume.

Summary: This study aims to determine the impact of county-level upward economic mobility on stage at diagnosis and receipt of treatment among pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients. The study found that patients from areas with higher economic mobility were more likely to be diagnosed at an earlier stage as well as receive surgery or chemotherapy. However, the impact of economic mobility on Black patients was smaller.

Summary: This study investigates the association between symptom burden and adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) among Black and White women with breast cancer. The findings show that severe symptoms are associated with lower AET adherence, and Black women have lower adherence rates due to their higher symptom burden and baseline characteristics. Better symptom management, particularly focusing on psychological symptoms, could improve AET adherence and reduce racial disparities in cancer outcomes.

Summary: This study found disparities in the uptake of ODX RS testing and risk distribution among different race/ethnicity groups. However, ODX RS was prognostic for overall mortality across all races/ethnicities, particularly in younger patients.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of racial and socioeconomic disparities on the outcomes of patients with glioblastoma (GBM), and found that African American patients had better survival rates compared to White patients, even after controlling for genetic variations and treatment. Additionally, African American patients with low income, public insurance, or no insurance had worse survival rates compared to White patients with similar conditions.

Summary: The study found that the rate of postmastectomy breast reconstruction in women aged 70 and older is low (6.1%), with 25% of patients also undergoing contralateral prophylactic mastectomy. The main types of reconstruction were implant reconstruction (48%) and autologous reconstruction (36.2%).

Summary: This study reveals the factors associated with patients' decision of undergoing cancer surgery and explores racial/ethnic disparities in surgery refusal. The results show that advanced age, female patients, earlier cancer stage, uninsured/Medicaid and unmarried patients have higher odds of surgery refusal. Black and API patients are more likely to refuse recommended surgery than white patients in overall cancer, but these racial/ethnic disparities narrow down after adjusting for insurance type and marital status. In subgroup analysis, API- white disparities in surgery refusal widely exist in prostate, lung/bronchus, liver, and stomach cancers.

Summary: This study found that Medicaid Expansion (ME) has significant benefits in improving postoperative outcomes for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) treated at low-volume facilities. Although outcomes still depend on the volume of care, ME helps to reduce disparities in surgical outcomes.

Summary: Incarceration is a rare complication of nonoperative management but is associated with a significant risk of death. Tailored decision making for elective repair considering risk factors for incarceration is necessary to mitigate the excess morbidity and mortality of an incarceration event based on the retrospective analysis results.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a predictive model of oncologic outcomes for patients with PDAC undergoing resection after neoadjuvant or induction chemotherapy. By analyzing data from 581 patients, it was found that the type of chemotherapeutic used and the number of chemotherapy cycles received preoperatively were associated with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Other factors contributing to survival models included tumor grade, histopathologic response to therapy, nodal status, and administration of adjuvant chemotherapy. The validated models had concordance indices of 0.68 and 0.65 for OS and RFS, respectively.

Summary: Decision curve analysis demonstrated that surgical risk calculators can effectively guide preoperative and postoperative management of patients undergoing hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery, such as readmission prevention and venous thromboembolism intervention. The performance of the ACS-SRC and POTTER calculators in predicting postoperative complications was comparable, with each showing superiority within specific risk threshold ranges.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the fluorescence expression of preoperative FR alpha and FR beta staining during lung cancer surgery. The results showed that benign tumors did not exhibit in vivo fluorescence, while 95% of malignant tumors fluoresced. The expression of FR alpha was significantly associated with the presence of fluorescence.

Summary: By querying the National Cancer Database (NCDB), researchers analyzed data from patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) between 2004 and 2020. The results showed a steady incidence of MPM and an increasing proportion of patients receiving treatment since 2010. The current management of MPM is limited by the stage and histological subtype, and the NCDB dataset provides valuable information for treatment discussions.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated patients who underwent pleurectomy and decortication for malignant pleural mesothelioma. The results showed that performing tracheostomy, gastrostomy/jejunostomy tube placement, and therapeutic anticoagulation in addition to the standard procedure can reduce the risk of postoperative aspiration pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, and catheter-related sepsis.
