Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the revascularization of left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease, as well as the co-existing non-coronary atherosclerosis (NCA). The results showed that PCI had better clinical outcomes in terms of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and bleeding in patients with NCA compared to CABG. However, no significant difference was observed in patients without NCA.

Summary: This study developed a biomarker-based risk model to predict major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndromes during the 12 months after hospital admission. The model incorporated clinical variables and the measurement of NT-proBNP, and demonstrated improved predictive capability compared to existing risk scores. It provides a useful tool for personalized care and risk assessment in ACS patients.

Summary: This study compared the survival rates of colorectal cancer in individuals of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent with other racial/ethnic groups, including non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian, and Hispanic individuals, in a diverse population-based sample in California. The study found that MENA individuals had the highest five-year colorectal cancer-specific survival rate (73.2%), while Black individuals had the lowest (61.0%). Asian, Hispanic, and MENA race/ethnicity were associated with higher survival, while Black race/ethnicity was associated with lower survival compared to non-Hispanic White race/ethnicity.

Summary: In patients without baseline coronary plaques, glycemic control status is strongly associated with the risk of rapid plaque progression (RPP). Regular monitoring of glycemic control status may be helpful for preventing the rapid progression of coronary atherosclerosis, irrespective of baseline risk factors.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of smoking status on recurrent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients who recently underwent PCI. The study found that smokers did not have a better short-term outcome and were more prone to an earlier onset of MACEs post-PCI, indicating the need for smoking cessation programs for further prevention.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different anticoagulation practices during Impella(R) support, and their association with complications and outcomes. The study found that the usage of Impella(R) evolved over time, with a shift from facilitating high-risk PCI to LV unloading in cardiogenic shock. The study also found a low rate of device malfunction and comparable rates of ischemic stroke and bleeding to those reported in the literature. Rating: 8/10.

Summary: This study observed the effect of baseline differences between men and women on early outcomes after PCI. The study found that although there were differences in clinical presentation and disease complexity, the 30-day outcomes for death and major adverse cardiovascular events were similar between men and women. Women had a higher rate of major bleeding events and lower adherence to medication therapy.

Summary: How do race and class intersect in state practices of nation-building? Jennifer Elrick's book explores this question by discussing the conceptualization of the relation between race and class. She argues that there is both inclusion and intersectionality between race and class in state practices, and that cultural and moral traits play a role in both racial and class classification systems.

Summary: This case series illustrates the impact of COVID-19 infection on the heart in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Atrioventricular (AV) block is a significant cardiac complication in patients with acute MI who test positive for COVID-19 infection, regardless of the presence of symptoms. Among our series, conduction disorders are more common in patients who test positive for COVID-19 infection and have acute inferior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. 11 out of 18 patients with acute inferior STEMI and COVID-19 infection tested positive for atrioventricular block disorders.
