The kinetics of titanium nitride synthesized with Ti and N-2 at different temperatures were examined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. The maximum conversion degrees after 4 h were 0.55, 0.76, 0.93, and 0.96 at 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 degrees C, respectively. The reaction mechanism was analyzed through both model fitting method and ln-ln analysis method. Results showed that the reaction was initially controlled by nucleation and growth, as represented by the kinetic equation: [-ln(1 - a)](4) = kt, Then the reaction was controlled by three-dimension diffusion, as represented by the kinetic equation: [1-(1 - a)(1/3)](2) = kt. Activation energies for the two stages were 214.84 and 124.01 kJ/mol respectively. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
