Background: To examine the effect of early menarche ( EM) on adolescent body composition and fat distribution, and to explore the possible contribution of birth weight (BW) to this relationship. Methods: From the cross-sectional AVENA study, 788 girls ( aged 13-18.5 years) were selected. Post-menarcheal body composition was estimated by anthropometric methods. Results: BW Z-score was associated with age at menarche (beta = 0.496, p < 0.001). EM ( age of menarche ! 12 years) adolescents were shorter, had a higher body mass index (BMI), fat free mass index (FFMI), fat mass index (FMI) and waist circumference ( all p < 0.01). BW was associated with height (p < 0.001), BMI Z-score (p < 0.01), FFMI (p < 0.01) and FMI (p < 0.05). These relationships did not change when the analysis was controlled for age of menarche. Height and FFM were lower in EM (p < 0.01), but these effects seem to be due to the BW (p < 0.01). Conclusion: EM was strongly associated with unhealthy body composition in female adolescents, but these relationships seem to be due to the programming effect of BW. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Neurotrophic factors and brain health in children with overweight and obesity: The role of cardiorespiratory fitness

Mireia Adelantado-Renau, Irene Esteban-Cornejo, Jose Mora-Gonzalez, Abel Plaza-Florido, Maria Rodriguez-Ayllon, Jose Maldonado, M. Victoria Escolano-Margarit, Jose Gomez Vida, Andres Catena-Martinez, Kirk Erickson, Francisco B. Ortega

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between plasma-derived neurotrophic factors and brain health indicators in children with overweight or obesity. The study also examined whether cardiorespiratory fitness played a moderating role in these associations. The results showed that the associations between neurotrophic factors and brain health indicators were not strong or consistent.

Validity and reliability of the International fItness scale (IFIS) in preschool children

Summary: The study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the parent-reported IFIS in preschoolers. The results indicate that there is poor concordance between parent-reported fitness levels and objective assessment, suggesting that parents may not be able to correctly classify preschoolers according to their fitness level.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between portion sizes (PSs) from different food groups and energy, as well as nutrient intakes in European adolescents. The results showed that energy intake increased with elevated intakes of energy-dense foods. Larger portions of certain food groups were associated with increased intake of specific nutrients. Conversely, larger portions of high energy-dense foods were associated with lower intake of vitamins and micronutrients. These findings have implications for future dietary guidance and targeted strategies to address nutrient intakes in European adolescents.

Fecal microbiota composition is related to brown adipose tissue 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in young adults

L. Ortiz-Alvarez, F. M. Acosta, H. Xu, G. Sanchez-Delgado, R. Vilchez-Vargas, A. Link, J. Plaza-Diaz, J. M. Llamas, A. Gil, I Labayen, P. C. N. Rensen, J. R. Ruiz, B. Martinez-Tellez

Summary: This study investigated the association between fecal microbiota composition and brown adipose tissue (BAT) volume, activity, and radiodensity in young adults. The results showed that the abundance of Akkermansia, Lachnospiraceae sp., and Ruminococcus genera was negatively correlated with BAT volume and activity, while the abundance of Bifidobacterium genus was positively correlated with BAT activity. In addition, the abundance of Sutterellaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae families was positively correlated with glucose uptake by white adipose tissue and skeletal muscles. These findings suggest that fecal microbiota composition may play a role in the regulation of BAT and glucose uptake in young adults. Evaluation: 8/10.

Early life factors and hippocampal functional connectivity in children with overweight/obesity

Summary: This study investigated the association between anthropometric neonatal data (birth length and birth weight) and breastfeeding practices (exclusive and any breastfeeding) with hippocampal functional connectivity and academic performance in children with overweight/obesity. The results showed that birth weight was positively associated with connectivity between the hippocampus and certain brain regions, while breastfeeding was negatively associated with connectivity between the hippocampus and other brain regions. However, there was no significant relationship between these connectivity outcomes and academic abilities.

Summary: This study found that meal timing was not associated with body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors in young adults. However, in young men, a longer daily eating window and a shorter time from midsleep point to first food intake were associated with better cardiometabolic health.

The study also found that compared to the healthiest lifestyle pattern, adolescents in other lifestyle patterns had a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity and central obesity.

Summary: This longitudinal study analyzed changes in physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health in Spanish university students during and one year after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed decreased physical activity, increased sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health during confinement. Most parameters improved one year later, but participants still reported lower physical activity, more sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health compared to before confinement. Higher levels of physical activity and lower sedentary time were associated with better sleep and mental health during the pandemic.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive description of the resistance exercise program implemented in the AGUEDA study. The exercise program consisted of a combination of upper and lower limb exercises using elastic bands and the participant's own body weight as resistance. The feasibility of the program was evaluated and it was found to be feasible with high retention and attendance rates, low adverse events, and low economic cost. It is predicted that a 24-week resistance exercise program will have positive effects on brain health in cognitively normal older adults.
