Summary: This study suggests that CD4/CD8 ratio recovery is associated with a lower incidence of CKD in HIV-infected patients receiving ART, and NNRTI-based regimen is a better choice for CD4/CD8 ratio recovery and reducing the risk of CKD.

Summary: The study highlights the association between T cell phenotypic signatures and the size of the latent HIV reservoir, with frequencies of PD-1+ and TIGIT+ CD4 T cells positively correlating with HIV DNA levels, while frequencies of HIV-specific CD4 T cells negatively correlate. These findings provide important insights into the mechanism of viral persistence and potential therapeutic targets.

Summary: This prospective cohort study in southern Ethiopia identified a significant risk of virologic failure in children with HIV infection, with limited predictive value of clinical variables for virologic failure. It emphasizes the need for rapid and reliable viral load testing and adherence interventions in sub-Saharan Africa to adequately address the HIV epidemic.

Summary: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the lifespan of people living with HIV, but their immune system remains in a state of sustained activation/inflammation. This study investigated the inflammatory profile of adolescents living with perinatal HIV-1 infection (ALPHI) receiving ART in an African context.

Summary: This study compared the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and mortality rates between HIV-infected and HIV/HTLV-1 co-infected patients in Peru. The results showed that HIV/HTLV-1 co-infected patients had a significantly shorter survival time compared to HIV-infected patients. This suggests that the immune alterations caused by HTLV-1 in CD4 cell count may have contributed to late initiation of antiretroviral treatment and prophylaxis against opportunistic infections over the decades, and thus reducing their benefits in these patients.

Summary: Reliable data on the burden of opportunistic infections (OIs) after the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is critical. This study aims to estimate the pooled prevalence of OIs and identify associated factors in HIV-infected adults receiving ART in Ethiopia.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of HIV-1 antiretroviral therapy and treatment adherence in real-world practice settings. The findings suggest that ART regimens with a high genetic barrier to resistance combined with improved treatment adherence may reduce the transmission of HIV-1 resistant variants.

Summary: Chronic HIV-1 infection leads to CD4(+) T cell loss, with distinct mechanisms affecting pyroptotic and apoptotic CD4(+) T cells. Pyroptosis is closely associated with inflammation and driven by NLRP3 inflammasome activation, while apoptosis is more related to T cell activation status.

Summary: This study described the viral response over a two-year follow-up period for 39 perinatally HIV-infected infants in Mozambique who initiated treatment at one month of age. The findings showed a low rate of viral load suppression and a high rate of viral rebound. More frequent monitoring of viral response and timely adherence support for infants experiencing rebound are recommended. Tailored psychosocial support and differentiated service delivery should be provided for mother-baby pairs.

Summary: The study found that HIV/AIDS patients who attend religious services monthly have higher social support, less unhealthy behaviors, lower drug use rates, and lower depression. After adjustment, religious attendance was associated with a reduced risk of mortality, but this association became non-significant after controlling for smoking status.

Summary: This study is a retrospective cohort analysis of retention rates in adolescents aged 10-19 years on antiretroviral therapy in Windhoek, Namibia. The results show that the retention rates do not meet the UNAIDS revised target. Gender-specific interventions are needed to keep male and older adolescents motivated and engaged in long-term care, and to promote adherence amongst adolescents who initiated ART in late adolescence (15-19 years).

Summary: This article aims to study the overlapping epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV infection and reveal the correlation between HCV and HIV infection and its impact on health. The study found a high prevalence of HCV-HIV coinfection in the population, with HCV diagnosis often preceding HIV detection. Therefore, establishing robust surveillance systems is crucial for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HCV and HIV infections.
