Summary: Our study investigates the impact of urbanization on cognitive function among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, as well as the potential mechanisms. The findings suggest that urban nonmigrants have better cognitive function compared to urbanized-rural and rural nonmigrants. The improvement in living conditions and income are the main drivers behind the relationship, indicating the beneficial effect of urbanization on cognitive function.

Summary: This study investigated the association of standing balance with cognitive functions and the rate of cognitive decline among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. The results showed that good standing balance was significantly associated with higher cognitive function and a lower decline in mental status and global cognition.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 is associated with decreased lung function and cognitive impairment. It investigated whether the effect of PM2.5 on cognitive function is mediated by lung function. The results showed that lung function partially mediates the association between long-term PM2.5 exposure and cognition. Therefore, more clean air actions should be taken to improve lung function and cognitive function in older adults.

Summary: This scoping review synthesized the available literature on cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) in racial and ethnic minority populations. The findings suggest that there are disparities in CRCI among racial and ethnic minoritized individuals, with Black and non-white patients being more likely to experience CRCI compared to their white counterparts. The study suggests the need for standardized guidelines in measuring and reporting the racial and ethnic composition of research samples, differentiation of CRCI findings by racial and ethnic subgroups, consideration of the influence of structural racism on health outcomes, and development of strategies to promote the participation of racial and ethnic minority groups.

Summary: This study utilized large-scale population-based data to investigate the association between cognitive function and diabetes in Canadian population. The results showed that type 2 diabetes is associated with lower performance in tasks assessing executive function, reaction time, and memory. However, no significant association was found between other types of diabetes and cognitive performance.

Summary: The study suggests that educational attainment has a positive impact on cognitive reserve for Whites, attenuating the negative effects of certain brain integrity indicators on memory and language abilities. However, this impact is not significant for Blacks and Hispanics.

Summary: This study examined the longitudinal association between food insecurity and changes in memory function among middle to older-aged adults in the US. The results showed that food insecurity was associated with slightly faster memory decline, suggesting potential negative cognitive outcomes associated with exposure to food insecurity in older age.

Summary: Cognitive ability plays a crucial role in the well-being of aging populations. Through an epigenome-wide association study on monozygotic twins, specific epigenetic variations significantly involved in functional genes and pathways related to cognitive function were identified. This research may offer insights for new diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for cognitive dysfunction.
