Summary: The WHO AFRO COVID-19 IMST conducted an intra-action review to document best practices, challenges, lessons learnt and areas for improvement in response to the pandemic. Qualitative approaches were used for data collection, including document reviews, online surveys, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Thematic analysis focused on operations of IMST, data and information management, human resource management, and institutional framework/governance. Good practices identified included guidelines, protocols, technical expertise, resource mobilisation, logistics management, regular updates, timely reporting, deployment, and coordination. Challenges identified included communication gap, inadequate personnel, lack of scientific updates, and coordination with partners. The identified strong points/components will inform future decision-making and actions for improving the response coordination mechanism.
