Background: The impact of allergy on chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is controversial. Objective: To evaluate whether a history of CRS is more prevalent in patients with allergic rhinitis than in those with nonallergic persistent rhinitis. Methods: A total of 115 patients (78 females; mean age, 31.9 years; age range, 14-64 years) with persistent rhinitis were included in the study. A 7-point analog scale was used to report the severity of individual and global CRS symptoms and to determine the impact of rhinosinusitis symptoms on quality of life. The allergic status of the patients was evaluated using skin prick tests for common inhalant allergens, and asthma was evaluated by means of history, physical examination, and respiratory function tests. Rhinoscopy and paranasal sinus computed tomography were used to determine CRS. Results: Asthma and CRS were not significantly different in allergic and nonallergic patients. Nasal polyps were found equally in both groups (8 patients). However, mean Lund-Mackay staging scores, postnasal drainage, dental pain, and global CRS scores were significantly higher in patients with nonallergic rhinitis (P = .045, P = .001, P = .02, and P =.01, respectively). No significant correlations, except for dental pain (correlation coefficient, 0.250; P = .008), were found between Lund-Mackay scores and CRS symptoms. In rhinoscopy, the only conspicuous difference was nasal purulence in allergic patients (P =.002). Conclusion: Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis may contribute similarly to the development of

Summary: Paucigranulocytic asthma (PGA) is the most common phenotype of stable asthma, characterized by predominant macrophages in sputum. PGA patients have a lower uncontrolled asthma ratio and lower FEV1 reversibility compared to other phenotypes.

Summary: Anxiety and depression are prevalent in patients with drug hypersensitivity, leading to a significant decrease in their quality of life. Self-administered psychological questionnaires are useful in assessing and managing the psychological status of patients. Therefore, psychological support is critical in reducing the negative outcomes of hypersensitivity reactions in patients.

Expert Opinion on Practice Patterns in Mild Asthma After the GINA 2019 Updates: A Major Shift in Treatment Paradigms from a Long-Standing SABA-Only Approach to a Risk Reduction-Based Strategy with the Use of Symptom-Driven (As-Needed) Low-Dose ICS/LABA

Summary: This article reviews the current knowledge on practice patterns in real-life management of mild asthma and highlights the recent updates in asthma treatment by The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). The study suggests a shift from short-acting beta 2-agonists (SABA)-only therapy to the use of symptom-driven low-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)-formoterol combinations in mild asthma. The new recommendations aim to guide clinicians for the best clinical practice in applying these new treatment paradigms.

No increased risk of severe COVID-19 in asthma treated with biologics

Sengul Beyaz, Emircan Erecan, Pinar Mutlu, Zeynep Ferhan Ozseker

Summary: The impact of biologic therapies on the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the outcome of COVID-19 for severe asthmatics were evaluated in this study. It was found that the rate of COVID-19 infection was higher in severe asthma patients receiving biologics, but treatment with biologics may have protection against severe COVID-19 and mortality. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of biologic agents in viral infections, especially SARS-CoV-2.
