Summary: Despite the global market of dietary supplements, the impact of these supplements on kidney disease remains uncertain. A study in Korea analyzed data from over 13,000 adults and found a significant association between dietary supplements and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vitamin and mineral intake was the most common type of supplement, followed by omega-3 fatty acids and ginseng. Those who consumed amino acids and proteins, ginseng and red ginseng, and herbal medicine had a higher prevalence of CKD, while probiotic supplement users had a lower prevalence. Further research is needed to understand the specific effects of each supplement on CKD.

Summary: Residential greenness, as measured by NDVI, is associated with decreased odds of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults. The inverse association is more pronounced in younger individuals, males, those with higher socioeconomic status, smokers, and those living in regions with higher levels of fine particulate matter pollution. Strengthening green space construction, particularly in areas with lower greenness, may be beneficial for the prevention and control of CKD.

Summary: There are multiple childhood risk factors associated with future onset and progression of CKD, including genetic factors, perinatal factors, childhood kidney diseases, childhood onset of chronic conditions, and different lifestyle factors. The available published information suggests that the lifelong risk for CKD can be attributed to multiple factors that appear already during childhood, but results are conflicting on the effects of childhood physical activity, diet, and dyslipidemia on future renal function. On the other hand, there is consistent evidence to support follow-up of high-risk groups.

Summary: Intraoperative hypotension and blood loss during radical nephrectomy are significant risk factors for the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Acute kidney injury (AKI) after surgery is related to the presence of CKD and decline in renal function after 12 months. Factors such as higher preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and contralateral kidney CT volume reduce the risk of postoperative CKD. NLR > 3.5 can predict the risk of AKI with CKD upstage. Overall, half of patients after radical nephrectomy are at increased risk of CKD.

Summary: Lockdown measures have significant psychological impacts and may increase cardiovascular risk. People with depression symptoms during lockdown are more likely to experience increased cardiovascular drug treatment, decreased physical activity, and weight gain after lockdown. Changes in sleep patterns and living in rural areas during lockdown are associated with higher incidence of depression, while having a better relationship with one's partner during lockdown is associated with less incident depression. Continuing to work in roles requiring in-person contact with the public during lockdown is associated with more incident anxiety after lockdown, while decreased alcohol consumption during lockdown is associated with less incident anxiety.

Summary: Between 2000 and 2016, both in-hospital and out-of-hospital mortality rates for acute coronary events (ACE) declined in France, with a greater decrease observed in out-of-hospital deaths. The contribution of out-of-hospital mortality to total ACE mortality increased over time, especially among elderly patients. These findings highlight the importance of reducing out-of-hospital mortality.

Summary: This study assessed the correlates of acute heart failure (AHF) occurring at the early stage of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the synergism between early AHF and diabetes mellitus (DM) on 5-year mortality. The results showed that early AHF was the most frequent complication of AMI and was twice as common in patients with DM compared to those without DM. After adjustment, early AHF and DM were associated with reduced 5-year survival, with a synergistic effect in patients with both conditions.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the long-term risk of first recurrence of ACS among survivors of an incident ACS, based on the STEMI/NSTEMI/UA diagnosis. The risk of recurrence did not depend on the type of the incident ACS, but major complications and impaired LVEF increased the risk. The most frequent forms of recurrence were NSTEMI and UA.
