Among domestic animals, teat order is only observed in the pig. In order to achieve the healthy growth and weaning of piglets, it is important to elucidate if volume of colostrum secretion and immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG concentrations differ among the teats of a sow. Nine sows were used to evaluate the difference in colostrum secretion volume (CSV) and four of these sows were assessed for IgA and IgG concentrations from each teat. Samples were collected five times during 21h following parturition. Teats were assigned anatomical locations of teat (1 to 7) from anterior to posterior. The CSV of anterior (locations 1 and 2) and middle teats (locations 3-5) was significantly higher than those of posterior teats (locations 6 and 7) throughout the experiment except for 18h post-parturition (P<0.05). The CSV of the teats at location 1 was significantly higher at most collection times than those at locations 6 and 7. A positive correlation of CSV was observed with IgA and IgG concentrations from 12h and 6h post-parturition, respectively (P<0.05). The results suggest that anterior teats secrete greater volumes of colostrum and that these tend to contain higher IgA and IgG than posteriors teats.

Intensive, prolonged exercise seemingly causes gut dysbiosis in female endurance runners

So Morishima, Wataru Aoi, Aki Kawamura, Takahiro Kawase, Tomohisa Takagi, Yuji Naito, Takamitsu Tsukahara, Ryo Inoue

Summary: The gut microbiota of female endurance runners was found to be dysbiotic compared to control subjects, with certain bacteria being associated with gut inflammation. Furthermore, the elevated concentration of succinate in the female endurance runners may be partly attributed to the abundance of Faecalibacterium, suggesting a potential link between intensive exercise and gut dysbiosis. Further research on the impact of intensive exercise on gut microbiota is recommended.

Edible bird's nest extract downregulates epidermal apoptosis and helps reduce damage by ultraviolet radiation in skin of hairless mice

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate whether daily intake of edible bird's nest extract can reduce ultraviolet-induced damage to the skin. The results showed that the extract enhanced the expression of superoxide dismutase 2 and reduced apoptosis in the epidermis, which helped in reducing skin damage.

Fermented rice bran supplementation ameliorates obesity via gut microbiota and metabolism modification in female mice

Summary: We investigated the effects of fermented rice bran (FRB) administration in two groups of C57BL/6J mice. The results showed that FRB supplementation suppressed high-fat-induced weight gain and altered the intestinal microbiota profile. It did not increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria and even suppressed the growth of specific bacteria. FRB supplementation counteracted high-fat-induced obesity by modulating the gut microbiota and host metabolism.

Metabolism of Imidazole Dipeptides, Taurine, Branched-Chain Amino Acids, and Polyamines of the Breast Muscle Are Affected by Post-Hatch Development in Chickens

Shozo Tomonaga, Takahiro Kawase, Takamitsu Tsukahara, Yoshiyuki Ohta, Jun-ichi Shiraishi

Summary: Metabolomic analyses of breast muscle and plasma in chickens revealed significant growth-related changes in metabolite levels between seven and 28 days of age. Some essential nutrients and growth-promoting metabolites were identified. The levels of imidazole dipeptides increased in the muscle, while taurine levels decreased. Upstream metabolites in branched-chain amino acid metabolism decreased in the muscle.

Summary: Viral diarrhea remains a problem with high mortality rates in farm animals. A combination of rehydration therapy and probiotics supplementation may improve survival rates, especially for piglets with porcine epidemic diarrhea. Further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of this combined approach.

Bacterial and fungal microbiota of total mixed ration silage stored at various temperatures

Ajmal Wali, Jianjian Hou, Takeshi Tsuruta, Naoki Nishino

Summary: Storage temperature has a significant impact on the bacterial and fungal microbiota and fermentation products composition of TMR silage. Lactic acid and acetic acid production are inhibited at high temperatures, while ethanol production increases. High lactic acid and acetic acid content in TMR silage reduces bacterial diversity, while high ethanol content reduces fungal diversity.

Summary: This study measured immunocytes in piglets to investigate how their populations change during development and are affected by weaning. The results showed a decrease in myeloid cells and an increase in NK cells after birth, while killer T, helper T, and B cell populations increased around 2-3 weeks after birth. There were no significant differences in the populations of the evaluated cell types between suckling and weaned piglets for at least 14 days post weaning.

Summary: Identifying early stress biomarkers is crucial in preventing mood and anxiety disorders. This study found changes in salivary miRNAs and metabolites in mice subjected to subchronic and mild social defeat stress, with one miRNA, miR-208b-3p, upregulated, possibly linked to myocardial infarction. Pathway analyses suggested that energy metabolism pathways were significantly related to the miRNAs affected by sCSDS in saliva.

Cyclic Nigerosylnigerose Attenuates High-Fat Diet-Induced Fat Deposition, Colonic Inflammation, and Abnormal Glucose Metabolism and Modifies Gut Immunoglobulin a Reactivity to Commensal Bacteria

Takeshi Tsuruta, Kei Sonoyama, Taisei Miyamoto, Qui D. Nguyen, Akiko Mizote, Mao Teraoka, Naoki Nishino

Summary: This study evaluates the effect of a dietary fiber called cyclic nigerosylnigerose (CNN) on high-fat diet-induced gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. The results show that CNN reduces fat deposition, inflammation, and endotoxin levels, and improves abnormal glucose metabolism. Additionally, CNN promotes IgA secretion and alters IgA reactivity to specific gut bacteria.
