Summary: This study investigated the effects of MC4R/TaqI and PIT-1/RsaI polymorphisms on growth and carcass quality traits in 576 Duroc pigs. The results showed that the GG genotype of the MC4R gene and the BB genotype of the PIT-1 gene had positive effects on average daily gain, backfat, and loin depth. Therefore, increasing the selection of the GG genotype (MC4R) and BB genotype (PIT-1) should be considered to improve these traits in Duroc pigs.

Summary: This study analyzed the associations between FTO, FABP2, LEP, LEPR, and MC4R gene polymorphisms and obesity-related parameters. The FTO A/T polymorphism was found to be significantly associated with fat mass index (FMI). In addition, gene-gene interaction analysis showed that all investigated genes had additional influence on body mass index (BMI) and FMI.

Summary: A weighted single-step genome-wide association study was conducted to identify genetic regions associated with growth traits in pigs, with the most significant regions explaining a substantial portion of genetic variance. Twenty-one candidate genes related to metabolism, bone growth, and fat deposition were identified, and they were found to be involved in bone formation, the immune system, and digestion. Utilizing phenotypic, genotypic, and genealogical information will aid in accelerating genetic improvement of growth traits in pigs.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different percentages of Duroc genes, gender (immunocastrated males and females) and their interaction on growth, carcass and meat quality traits for pigs. Crossbreeds with 50% Duroc had higher feed intake, carcass weight and backfat thickness but lower meat yield compared to 5% Duroc crossbreeds and purebred (100% Duroc) animals. Purebred animals had lower backfat and subcutaneous fat thickness, and higher muscle depth and meat yield. Immunocastrated males had better feed conversion and growth, but lower carcass weight and meat amount compared to females. Marbling scores were higher in purebred animals. The meat from 50% Duroc crossbreeds and 100% Duroc purebreds was more reddish pink in color than 5% Duroc crossbreeds. Females had higher marbling scores compared to immunocastrated males. Purebred animals required more medications during production.

Summary: Backfat thickness (BFT) is an economically important trait in the pig industry, and genetic markers and candidate genes related to BFT were identified through genotyping and genome-wide association analysis in two Duroc populations. Most candidate genes can be directly used for genetic improvement through molecular markers. New insights gained from this study will contribute to genetic studies aiming to increase carcass lean meat percentage in pigs.

Summary: In this study, we estimated the heritabilities and genetic correlations of semen production traits, litter traits, and pork production traits in purebred Duroc pigs. The heritabilities of semen production traits were equal to or higher than those of litter traits but lower than those of pork production traits. The genetic correlations between semen production traits and other traits were generally weak.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the genetic basis of litter traits in pigs, identifying valuable genes and genetic markers for pig breeding. Through a genome-wide association study, 76 significantly related SNPs and 10 potential candidate genes were detected, including 13 pleiotropic SNPs that affected multiple litter traits. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that significant pathways were associated with hormone secretion and embryo and organ development, providing new insights into improving litter quality in pigs.

Summary: This study investigated the adverse effects of homozygous regions on economic traits in two Duroc pig populations. The results showed that the two populations had different numbers and distributions of harmful homozygous regions, which may be related to different selection directions and intensities. Furthermore, several pleiotropic homozygous regions were found to reduce multiple phenotypic performances, and candidate genes in these regions were mainly related to growth, fertility, immunity, and fat deposition. Additionally, some homozygous genotypes were found to have opposite effects on different traits. This study not only deepens our understanding of the adverse effects of homozygous regions on phenotypes, but also highlights the potential of incorporating homozygosity information into breeding programs to estimate and control detrimental effects.

Summary: Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm, based on Hamiltonian dynamics, is a method with the potential to improve parameter estimation effectively. The optimal tuning of leapfrog integration for normal and inverse chi-square distributions was identified when applied to animal breeding data, and the method demonstrated superior performance compared to the Gibbs sampling method, as shown in the analysis of real pig data.
