Egg yolk is included in extenders for semen cryopreservation due to its protective effect against cold shock, which is attributed to the presence of low density lipoprotein (LDL). This study evaluates how semen quality is affected by using LDL as a replacement for egg yolk in extenders for cooled and frozen dog semen. In Experiment 1, semen was extended in TRIS-glucose at 5 degrees C, in four treatments: 20% egg yolk (T1); 6% (T2); 8% (T3); and 10% LDL (T4). Sperm motility and membrane integrity after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and the 50% conservation rate of motile spermatozoa (50 M) were evaluated. The 50 M was less for T1 than for the other treatments (P<0.01), but T2-T4 did not differ (P>0.05). In Experiment 2, glycerol at 10% was included in the freezing extender, in treatments similar to those from Experiment 1. Sperm motility and membrane integrity did not differ for T2, T3 and T4 at any period in Experiment 1 and after thawing in Experiment 2 (P>0.05), but were greater for all LDL treatments than for T1 (P<0.01), in both experiments. Thus, LDL can replace egg yolk in the composition of the TRIS-glucose extender for cooled or frozen dog semen. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Docosahexaenoic acid and phenazine ethosulfate are not efficient lipid modulators for porcine in vitro maturation systems

Jose Victor Cardoso Braga, Andrez Pastorello Bohn, Luana Pescke Soares, Eliza Rossi Komninou, Thomaz Lucia Junior, Arnaldo Diniz Vieira, Rafael Gianella Mondadori

Summary: The high lipid content in porcine oocytes impairs in vitro embryo production, and this study evaluates the effects of lipid modulators on embryo development and lipid content. The results showed that DHA supplementation impaired oocyte maturation and embryo development rates, while PES did not favor porcine embryo development or reduce lipid content.

Acidifiers blend on digestibility, blood metabolites and performance of nursery piglets

J. M. Oliveira Junior, A. R. Mendes, J. H. Montes, B. R. Alves, F. Moreira, I Bianchi, E. Schwegler, V Peripolli

Summary: The effect of two acidifier blends on acidification potential, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, and daily gain of nursery piglets was evaluated. The results showed that the acidifiers did not improve the digestibility of nutrients in the diet, but the inclusion of AC2 acidifier had a negative quadratic effect on daily gain.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive performances of gilts and weaned sows grouped at different days after insemination. The study was conducted on a sow farm in Brazil using animals from the Camborough genetic line. The results showed that group housing gilts on different days after insemination did not affect reproductive performance, while sows mixed 2 days after insemination had a reduction in litter size compared to those mixed on day 1.

Acclimation of replacement gilts to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae: a case study of fogging with an aerosol inoculum

Ricardo Y. Nagae, David D. E. S. N. Barcellos, Rafael R. Ulguim, Tais R. Michaelsen, Joao P. Zuffo, Mariana S. Goslar, Giovani R. Michelleto, Jonatas Wolf, Fernando P. Bortolozzo, Karine L. Takeuti

Summary: The aim of this case study was to assess the efficacy of fogging with a positive inoculum of M. hyopneumoniae to expose negative gilts in an acclimation program, and to evaluate the infection dynamics of M. hyopneumoniae in their piglets from lactation to slaughter. The use of fogging with a lung homogenate positive for M. hyopneumoniae successfully acclimated negative gilts. However, it did not prevent the presence of positive gilts at farrowing and the detection of the bacterium in their progeny by polymerase chain reaction.

Acute exposure to isoflurane impairs sperm parameters in mice

Marina Zanin, Antonio Sergio Varela, Izani Bonel Acosta, Edenara Anastacio Da Silva, Martielo Ivan Gehrcke, Carine Dahl Corcini

Summary: Isoflurane, a commonly used inhalational anesthetic, has shown rapid anesthesia induction and quietness. However, little is known about its adverse effects on reproductive aspects. This study aimed to investigate the impact of acute isoflurane exposure on mouse sperm quality immediately before euthanasia and 20 days later. The results reveal that acute anesthetic exposure reduces sperm motility and leads to the formation of damaged sperm cells prone to apoptosis, potentially affecting reproductive experiment outcomes even after 20 days.

Estimation of sperm concentration limits to produce intrauterine insemination doses in swine

Monike Quirino, Gabriela Teixeira da Rosa, Thais Spohr Christ, Willian Rodrigues Valadares, Rafael da Rosa Ulguim, Mari Lourdes Bernardi, Martin Schulze, Ana Paula Goncalves Mellagi, Fernando Pandolfo Bortolozzo

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of sperm concentration on boar semen quality and established concentration limits for their production. It was found that an increase in sperm concentration led to a linear decrease in sperm motility, while the integrity of plasma and acrosomal membranes and mitochondrial membrane potential were not significantly affected. Therefore, to maintain suitable sperm motility, the sperm concentration in boar semen doses should not exceed 55 x 10(6) cells/mL.

Metabolic profile of transition period in ewes and its influence on passive immunity transference in lambs

Domenico Weber Chagas, Josiane de Oliveira Feijo, Marcio Nunes Correa, Manoela Furtado, Juliano Santos Gueretz, Vanessa Peripolli, Ivan Bianchi, Fabiana Moreira, Elizabeth Schwegler

Summary: This study evaluated the metabolic profile in transition period Lacaune ewes according to parity and litter size born, and its influence on the transfer of passive immunity. The research found that ewes with higher litter sizes had a higher incidence of metabolic disorders, leading to production losses and potential health issues. Additionally, lambs born from these ewes had poorer immunity and lower live weights. It highlights the importance of monitoring the metabolic status and implementing measures to improve the health of ewes with higher litter sizes.

Summary: This study tested synchronization protocols without progestogens during the luteal phase in gilts. The results showed that the protocols based on PGF and hCG were effective in reducing the interval between estrus in gilts. Additionally, the hCG2 protocol had negative effects on the number of piglets born alive and total litter size.

Risk factors associated with stillbirth in sows

Vamire Luiz Sens Junior, Emanoelle Regina Rosa, Deivison Pereira Fagundes, Vanessa Peripolli, Rafael da Rosa Ulguim, Bruna Pereira Siqueira, Herica da Silva Messias, Fernando Pandolfo Bortolozzo, Ivan Bianchi

Summary: Through monitoring 587 farrowings on Farm A and 929 on Farm B, it was found that high parity, prolonged farrowing, and a large litter size were the most significant risk factors associated with stillbirth in sows. On Farm B, farrowing intervention through vaginal palpation and oxytocin increased the odds of stillbirth. Additionally, low-birth-weight piglets were more likely to be stillborn compared to their medium and high-birth-weight counterparts.
