Summary: This article provides an analysis of the indications, treatment, and criteria for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prosthesis and replacement using a systematic review and case series. The study shows that TMJ prostheses have a positive impact on mandibular movement, function, and pain reduction.

Summary: The study revealed that BRD4 inhibition alleviates TMJ OA-like pathological changes induced by mechanical stress and reduces inflammation both in vivo and in vitro. ChIP-seq analysis showed enrichment of BRD4 in the promoter region of genes related to stress and inflammatory pathways under mechanical stress, with Trem1 identified as a gene regulated by BRD4.

Summary: Misophonia is a common condition characterized by selective intolerance to sounds of oral or nasal origin. This study conducted a large epidemiological survey in Germany to determine the prevalence of misophonia symptoms in the adult population. The results showed that 5% of the sample had clinical misophonia symptoms, and individuals with these symptoms had higher rates of perfectionism, not-just-right experience, susceptibility to autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), and worse general health.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the effects of acute temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation on rein-tension and horse movement. Five horses were tested while long-reined on a treadmill, with one TMJ being injected with lipopolysaccharide. The results showed reduced rein-tension on the injected side and increased rein-tension on the non-injected side to maintain the correct position.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of MRI in cases of joint effusion and found a significant correlation between the presence of joint effusion detected by MRI and clinical and arthroscopic findings. Pain was significantly related to the presence of effusion, Wilkes advanced stages, synovitis, and adhesions.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the correlation between clinical and radiological signs and symptoms and arthroscopic findings in patients with TMJ dysfunction. A retrospective study of 487 patients undergoing TMJ arthroscopy revealed that pain symptoms were significantly associated with synovitis and disc displacement, Wilkes stage was a good predictor of the severity of synovitis and chondromalacia, and mouth opening was negatively correlated with adhesions.

Summary: A comparison of cardiovascular risk factors between populations with and without osteoarthritis in the UK over 25 years revealed a consistently higher prevalence of modifiable risk factors in individuals with osteoarthritis, especially when multiple risk factors were present. Findings suggest the importance of addressing cardiovascular risk factors, particularly obesity, in individuals with osteoarthritis.

Summary: Overloading stress induces progressive degeneration in TMJ cartilage, but can be reversed by self-repair at early stages. During the initial adaptation stage, robust proliferation of cartilage occurs, followed by widespread chondrocyte apoptosis and subsequent new chondrocyte proliferation with matrix degradation and subchondral bone catabolism.

Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling disease with significant morbidity worldwide. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes and microvesicles, play an essential role in the progression and treatment of OA, regulating tissue homeostasis and cell-to-cell communication. Synovial fluid and synovium-derived EVs have been identified as potential biomarkers for OA, and mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs have shown therapeutic effects. However, the different functions of EVs in knee joint and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are not well understood.

Summary: The study revealed that female sex, diabetes duration, hemoglobin A(1c), and hypertension are associated with sensory symptoms in Taiwanese diabetes patients. Numbness or tingling pain is the most common symptom, with fingers and toes being the most commonly affected anatomical sites.

Summary: This study using Dutch electronic health records showed that the epidemiological estimates of hip osteoarthritis (OA) are likely to be underestimated. By adding narrative data to the coded data, more realistic epidemiological estimates based on routine healthcare data can be obtained. However, developing a valid algorithm remains a challenge, possibly due to the diagnostic complexity of hip pain in general practice.

Summary: The study revealed that most female patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) had higher radiological scores, and TMD-joint patients had significantly higher scores than TMD-muscle patients. Different diagnoses may lead to variations in radiological characteristics.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of supplementing glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and methylsulfonylmethane after arthrocentesis plus intraarticular hyaluronic acid injection with treatment involving only hyaluronic acid injection for TMJ-OA. The results indicated that there were no significant additional clinical benefits or improvements for patients receiving GCM supplementation compared to those receiving only intraarticular HA injection.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA). The findings suggest that CBCT is superior to MRI in evaluating osseous changes of TMJ-OA, and that CBCT is more sensitive than MRI in detecting condylar erosion, condylar osteophyte, and flattening of the condyle and articular eminence.
