Summary: Excessive intake of fats and sugars in the Western diet is a major cause of obesity. This study investigated the effects of Western diet and spirulina supplementation on gestating and lactating domestic pigs as a model for metabolic disturbances. The results suggest that domestic pigs have limited suitability as a model for Western diet-induced metabolic impairments, but low-dose spirulina supplementation can partially attenuate the negative effects.

Summary: This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of pegbovigrastim (PEG) treatment on the partial net return of grazing dairy cows. The study found that PEG treatment increased the partial net return and resulted in an economic benefit of $210 ± $100 per cow per year. It also reduced the cost of treatment for clinical mastitis and numerically reduced the cost of culling.

Summary: The aim of this study was to validate the Italian version of the Staff Attitude to Coercion Scale (SACS), which measures mental health care staff's attitudes towards the use of coercion in treatment. The results of exploratory factor analysis confirmed a three-factor structure for the Italian version of SACS, although three items loaded on different factors compared to the original version. This suggests that the Italian version of SACS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing healthcare professionals' attitudes towards coercion.

Summary: The study revealed a lack of exposure to clinical signs among medical students, which was addressed through the implementation of a structured circuit-based teaching approach (Signs Circuits). This approach effectively improved students' recognition of clinical signs and their understanding of the importance of these signs in diagnosis, providing a feasible and reproducible solution to the identified deficiencies in sign exposure.

Summary: African swine fever (ASF) is a disease caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV) and has resulted in significant economic losses in China. By using a nonlinear dynamic model, the effect of culling on the transmission of ASFV was investigated, and it was found that culling can greatly contain the spread of the virus.

Summary: This study estimated the relative frequency of reasons for mortality among beef and dairy cattle in south-west Western Australia, highlighting gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, and reproductive conditions as the most common causes of death. The study also identified the need for standardization of data capture methods and disease definition criteria to improve future herd health programmes.

Summary: Functional cognitive disorder (FCD) accounts for a significant portion of patients in memory clinics. Studies have found that FCD patients are typically younger, more educated, and have higher rates of anxiety, depression, and family history of dementia compared to neurodegenerative diseases. Promising language profiles and interaction abilities may aid in distinguishing FCD from neurodegeneration.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of testing-culling measure on the transmission of animal brucellosis. By establishing a dynamic model and conducting theoretical analysis, it is found that this measure can induce complex transmission dynamics, which can help develop appropriate prevention and control measures.

Summary: Smoking accelerates the progression of periodontal disease by altering the subgingival microbiome, characterized by an increase in microbial richness and diversity in smokers compared to non-smokers. Temporal analysis revealed that the microbiome in shallow sites was less stable, while progression of periodontal disease was associated with specific taxa in the subgingival microbiome. These findings suggest that subgingival dysbiosis in smokers precedes clinical signs of periodontal disease.

Summary: This study aimed to examine warning signs before suicide attempts by analyzing narratives of patients with substance use problems. The findings revealed a wide range of warning signs in cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social aspects. The study suggests that these warning signs contribute to an increased acute risk of suicidal behavior.

Summary: The study compared antibiotic and ZnOmed usage in different pig production systems and found that antibiotic usage was highest in conventional indoor systems and lowest in organic systems. Non-use of antibiotics was more common in welfare-label systems, while the probability of using was higher in conventional indoor systems. There was a weak correlation between antibiotic and ZnOmed usage in conventional indoor systems, indicating different usage patterns across systems.

Summary: Comparing meat and eating quality from two cross-breeds of pigs and two feeding strategies, it was found that restrictive feeding led to smaller but leaner carcasses and tenderer BF, while meat from NORM pigs was sweeter. Additionally, restrictive feeding altered the fatty acid composition in the meat.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of restricted feeding in the grower phase followed by ad libitum feeding in the finisher phase on growth performance, feed efficiency, and intakes from concentrate and the range area. Results showed that partially compensatory growth was achieved by pigs under the restricted feeding regime, with high growth rates and feed efficiencies observed in both feeding strategies under free-range conditions. However, energy inputs from direct foraging were more pronounced during concentrate restriction, indicating potential sustainability challenges for free-range reared pigs.

Summary: In this study, the STOC free model was applied to analyze BVDV data in four regions and estimate the probability of herd-level freedom from infection. The results showed that for dairy herds considered free from infection, regardless of using default or country-specific priors, the predicted probabilities of freedom were very high.

Summary: In this paper, the application of environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in agroforestry in the context of food systems is systematically reviewed. The findings reveal that most of the studies are conducted in tropical climates with limited consideration of post-farm gate system boundaries. Methodological issues include limited system boundaries, few impact categories, and differing functional units and multifunctionality approaches. The effects of agroforestry systems on biodiversity, climate change mitigation, water, soil, pollination, and pest and disease are only partially documented or not analyzed in the LCA studies.
