Summary: This study constructed two F-2 populations using the DM-resistant accession PI 442177 and mapped QTLs conferring DM resistance. A high-density genetic map was generated and a major QTL DM9.1 was consistently detected at different growth stages. QTL-seq analysis validated the presence of DM9.1 and a KASP marker co-segregating with DM9.1 was successfully developed, providing valuable information for DM-resistant gene cloning and melon DM-resistant breeding programs.

Summary: Grain size affects rice yield and quality. This study constructed a near-isogenic line LB3 with long grain size and identified a major QTL, qGL10, located on chromosome 10, for grain length. Candidate gene analysis suggested LOC_Os10g39130 (OsMADS56). Sequence comparison revealed SNPs in the promoter and coding regions of OsMADS56 in 02428 and LB3. Haplotype analysis indicated that the SNP9 (G/A) in the TGTCACA motif may contribute to the differential expression of OsMADS56. These findings provide a foundation for the molecular breeding of new rice varieties using qGL10.

Summary: By studying the progeny of a cross between two bean cultivars, four genetic loci that affect epicotyl length were found, and the chromosomal location of one of these loci was narrowed down using molecular markers, which can be used for selecting bean cultivars with longer epicotyls that are suitable for mechanical weeding and harvesting.

Summary: Subchondral cystic lesions (SCLs) are bone diseases that develop in young horses and can lead to lameness and poor performance. This study compared four treatments for SCLs in horses and found similar prognoses. Horses with larger SCLs had lower racing performance.

Summary: This systematic review examines the evidence for using ultrasonography in comparison to traditional radiography, arthroscopy or necropsy findings in the detection of osteochondrosis in horses. The review found a lack of strong evidence confirming the diagnostic accuracy and validity of ultrasonography in detecting osteochondral lesions in horses.

Summary: Stalk strength is an important trait in maize, affecting lodging resistance and harvestable yield. In this study, populations derived from the cross of two inbred lines were used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for rind penetrometer resistance (RPR). Fourteen RPR QTLs were identified and two major QTLs were narrowed down using fine-mapping strategy. Twelve candidate genes were identified for one of the QTLs. These findings contribute to molecular breeding for RPR in maize.

Summary: European fodder turnips were used as sources of clubroot resistance and two QTLs were identified using a hybrid F-2 population. The resistance QTLs were further confirmed and narrowed down using next-generation sequencing and molecular markers. Candidate resistance genes were also identified within the candidate regions.

Summary: Chalkiness in rice is influenced by high temperature and controlled by QTLs. This study identified two SSSLs with lower grain chalkiness and located two major QTLs for chalkiness. The results showed that these QTLs had significant effects on chalkiness and were more effective in reducing chalkiness under high temperature conditions.

Summary: In this study, stable QTLs related to seed length and width in wax gourd were identified using a high-density genetic map. The candidate gene BhHLS1 was found to be associated with the regulation of seed size. The findings of this study have significant implications for genetic improvement and molecular breeding of wax gourds.

Summary: The study demonstrated significant phenotypic variations among genotypes in both F3:4:5 and BC2F2:3 populations, with mesocotyl length showing significant positive correlation with %germination, root and shoot length. An 881 kb region on chromosome 7 was found to be associated with mesocotyl elongation. RNA-seq data and RT-PCR results identified and validated seven potential candidate genes.

Summary: Soybean is the most important source of protein meal globally, with the quantitative trait loci (QTL) cqSeed protein-003 on chromosome 20 exhibiting the highest additive effect among all protein QTLs in this crop. Through genetic mapping and candidate gene downregulation, the insertion/deletion variant in Glyma.20G85100 is identified as the likely gene underlying this significant QTL.
