Summary: This study compared the initial changes in pulpal blood flow between conventional and self-ligating fixed orthodontic brackets. It was found that PBF started to decrease after 20 minutes of archwire insertion, reached the maximum decrease after 72 hours, and returned to baseline values after 1 month in both groups.

Summary: This study compared the intensity, location, and short-term impact of periodontal discomfort/pain, as well as the related functional parameters of bite force and masticatory efficiency, between self-ligating and conventional orthodontic appliances. The results showed no significant differences in substance P levels, pain threshold, bite force, and masticatory efficiency between the two types of appliances. Therefore, when choosing between self-ligating and conventional orthodontic appliances, functional aspects such as pain, discomfort, and masticatory efficiency should not be considered.

Summary: This study compared the frictional properties of a self-ligating system with different closing mechanisms and a conventional system with different ligating mechanisms. The results showed that active self-ligating brackets tended to create more friction compared to passive self-ligating brackets, but were similar to conventional brackets with stainless steel ligatures.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the levels of microbial colonisation associated with conventional and self-ligating brackets. While some studies found no difference in colonisation between bracket types, others revealed mixed results. The evidence remains inconclusive regarding the association between bracket design and levels of microbial colonisation.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of self-ligating brackets on the levels of periodontal pathogens in the gingival crevicular fluid. The results showed that different types of brackets can modulate the subgingival microbiota and increase the levels of bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Preventive protocols should be adopted when using self-ligating brackets.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of different types of orthodontic appliances on treatment time and periodontal indices in adult patients with severe crowding. The findings show that using self-ligating brackets combined with flapless corticotomy can accelerate alignment of the upper teeth, reducing treatment time by 50%. Treatment time is also reduced by 25% when using self-ligating brackets alone. The adjunctive flapless corticotomy does not have negative effects on periodontal tissues.

Summary: This review compared different types of self-ligating brackets and found no significant difference in most clinical situations, except for torque expression where conventional brackets have a more significant advantage.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the levels of oxidative protein products, total antioxidant capacity, and myeloperoxidase activity in the saliva of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with clear removable aligners or fixed passive self-ligating brackets applying light forces. The results showed that both treatment methods increased oxidative stress after the first 30 days of treatment. However, there were no significant changes in antioxidant capacity during the initial phases of orthodontic treatment.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the accuracy of passive self-ligating lingual straight-wire appliances with square slots in various intra-arch movements. The results showed that the appliances displayed excellent clinical accuracy, but with some statistical accuracy decrease.

Summary: This study compared and evaluated the accumulation of plaque and colonization of S. mutans and other microorganisms on self-ligating and conventional ligated brackets in orthodontic treatment. The results showed that the self-ligating brackets had superior plaque control and reduced bacterial colonization compared to conventional ligation.

Summary: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with oral microbial dysbiosis. The human beta-glucuronidase (GUS) can be used as a biomarker for its severity. This study examines the role of GUS enzymes encoded by the human microbiome in periodontal disease and identifies oral GUS activity as a biomarker for clinical monitoring and treatment of periodontitis.
