Substantial π-aromaticity in the anionic heavy-metal cluster [Th@Bi12]4-

Armin R. Eulenstein, Yannick J. Franzke, Niels Lichtenberger, Robert J. Wilson, H. Lars Deubner, Florian Kraus, Rodolphe Clerac, Florian Weigend, Stefanie Dehnen

Summary: This study demonstrates the straightforward synthesis of a metal 12-ring with 2 π-aromaticity, showing a stronger ring current than benzene and equivalent to porphine. It indicates the possibility of designing and generating substantial π-aromaticity in large metal rings for potential use in cluster-based reactions.

Heisenberg Spin Chains via Chalcogen Bonding: Noncovalent S•••O Contacts Enable Long-Range Magnetic Order

R. Alex Mayo, Ian S. Morgan, Dmitriy Soldatov, Rodolphe Clerac, Kathryn E. Preuss

Summary: A new radical ligand has been reported, with two crystal polymorphs identified. The self-assembly of Mn(II) metal ions with the ligand leads to a linear arrangement of three Mn(II) units bridged by two radical ligands. Magnetic measurements indicate effective ferromagnetic interactions along the supramolecular chain involving noncovalent S center dot center dot center dot O contacts.

Summary: The co-crystallization of TCNQ-· and 3-MepyDTDA+· resulted in solvates with pi dimers at high temperatures and a transition to a diamagnetic phase at lower temperatures, showcasing cooperative interactions leading to magnetic bistability.

Self-Assembly Synthesis of a [2]Catenane CoII Single-Molecule Magnet

Benjamin H. Wilson, Jas S. Ward, David C. Young, Jun-Liang Liu, Corine Mathoniere, Rodolphe Clerac, Paul E. Kruger

Summary: This study describes the self-assembly synthesis of an octanuclear Co-II [2]catenane with unique magnetic properties. By manipulating the synthetic conditions, a mixed-valence non-catenated rectangle can also be obtained. The work demonstrates the precise control of single-molecule magnets in complex arrangements through metallo-supramolecular chemistry.

Isabelle Ly, Antoine Vardon, Nicolas Chanut, Frederic Nallet, Roland J-M Pellenq, Mathieu Rouzieres, Rodolphe Clerac, Joudia Akil, Florence Epron, Catherine Especel, Renal Backov

Summary: By using integrative chemistry, high-porosity CoOx-SiO2 self-standing monoliths have been successfully prepared, showing that cobalt concentration significantly influences the organization and stability of mesoscopic voids, with increasing cobalt concentration favoring the formation of crystalline nanoparticles embedded within silica.

Reactive Solubilization of Heterometallic Clusters by Treatment of (TrBi3)2- Anions (Tr=Ga, In, Tl) with [Mn{N(SiMe3)2}2]

Julia Rienmueller, Andreas Schmidt, Nathan J. Yutronkie, Rodolphe Clerac, C. Gunnar Werncke, Florian Weigend, Stefanie Dehnen

Summary: Lowering the charge of Zintl anions by (element-)organic substituents allows their use as sources of (semi)metal nanostructures. A new strategy was developed using low-coordinate 3d metal complexes as electrophiles, leading to the synthesis of Zintl clusters with uncommon electronic structures and magnetic coupling.

Chemical Manipulation of the Spin-Crossover Dynamics through Judicious Metal-Ion Dilution

Xiang Li, Dong Zhang, Yuqing Qian, Wenxuan Liu, Corine Mathonie, Rodolphe Clerac, Xin Bao

Summary: In 2019, a unique Fe-II complex with a low-spin ground state was described by our groups. The accessibility of the low-spin state was hindered by slow dynamics of the high-spin to low-spin phase transition. Here, we report the successful control of this spin-crossover process through metal-ion dilutions. The behavior of thermally induced spin-crossover was observed to emerge or be suppressed depending on the radius of the metal ion used for dilution (Ni-II or Zn-II). The reversible photo-switching was confirmed in all mixed-metal complexes where the low-spin state was thermally accessible.
